Hell, the thought of her having my baby has consumed me the past few days.

I know asking her what I did was impulsive, but to be fair, she mentioned it first. If Kaitlyn wants a baby, why not have mine and give me a family too?

After my dad died, my childhood took a turn for the worse. My mother met Stanley, and we never traveled and explored new things once he came into the picture. I’ll make sure I’m nothing like him.

I can't wait to show my children everything Texas has to offer, especially on the ranch. They'll grow up with animals like I did, but they’ll be surrounded by constant love.

Once I've showered and dressed, I grab a beer and chug half of it before taking a breath. Next, I pull out Kaitlyn's Fireball.

She’ll either change my life or break my heart.

Either way, I'll respect her decision.

I hear her truck roaring as she turns into the driveway. Moments later, she walks in and calls out, "Hello?"

"In the kitchen," I shout.

As soon as she enters, she eyes the bottle of amber liquid. "Oh good, I can't be sober for this conversation."

Instead of grabbing a glass, she unscrews the cap and chugs it.

When her eyes meet mine, I arch a brow. "You okay?"

She takes another swig before responding. "Yeah, I just needed something in my system."

I smirk with amusement. "Wanna go to the living room and chat?"

"Sure, I’m bringing the Fireball, though."

Nervously, I follow her to the couch. My gut feeling tells me she's going to say thanks, but no thanks, and I wouldn't even blame her. It's a big deal and not something just casually mentioned in passing. Bringing sex into our friendship would change everything.

Still, I'm holding on to hope.

"I've thought a lot about what you asked," she begins as I wipe my sweaty palms down my jeans.

Before continuing, she takes another shot but coughs and makes a face.

"Kate, just tell me," I prompt. "It's okay if you say—"

"Yes," she blurts out.

I grab the bottle and take a drink. Did she really just say yes?

"I'm gonna need you to repeat that," I say once I come up for air.

"I'm agreeing to your proposition."

My brows rise in shock.

"With conditions," she adds. "We're crossing big lines, so we need to have some ground rules."

"I agree," I tell her, my breaths finally steady.

She readjusts on the couch to face me. "This should be kept strictly transactional so neither of us gets hurt. I want us to do everything we can to prevent feelings from entering the picture so it’s less complicated."

As soon as those words leave her mouth, a dagger stabs me in the heart.

Years ago, I came to the conclusion that my feelings for her were one-sided, but I was hoping to be wrong. If Kaitlyn felt anything, she wouldn't be so hell-bent on making sure we stay just friends.
