“Yeah.” My mom sits down and crosses her legs, holding my grandma’s hand.

“Noah’s here, let’s go.” Dad nods toward the door.

I huff.

“We’re not going anywhere. Let’s just wait until she wakes up.” My mom’s other hand pats the top of Grandma’s hand. “So, Noah. Were you with a girl?”

“No, I was on an excursion.”

My mom’s lips turn downward.

“Sorry to disappoint you,” I add.

“You’re not. I just thought you were distracted somehow.” Her eyebrows waggle.

I groan. “This family talks about sex too much.”

“Your grandma always said it wasn’t anything to hide. Everyone has needs.” My mom diverts her attention from me back to my grandma.

It’s so weird to be in the same room as my grandma and my parents. It’s been so long since it happened. I hate that it took my grandma having a heart attack to make it happen.

My dad picks up a brochure and starts reading it. Would it kill him to show a little concern for my grandma?

Grandma moves a bit, and I stand to make sure she sees me first.

“Glasses,” she says in a weak voice. I put her glasses on her face, making her look more like the strong woman I’ve known my entire life. “Better.”

“How are you?” I pat her hand.

She looks around. “Ursula? Rex?”

My dad doesn’t stand, but my mom does. “Yes, Midge. It’s us.”

“You didn’t have to come.”

“Technically, we did, because Noah was too busy to answer his phone.” My dad doesn’t look up from the brochure.

“Oh,” my grandma says, and her disappointment is clear. She’s always wanted a relationship with them. They were the ones who cut her off after she sold the business.

“Regardless, we’re all here now. Do you remember anything?” Mom asks.

“No.” She shakes her head. “Where were you?” she asks me. “With a girl? At SunBay Inn?”

“SunBay Inn?” My mom looks at me.

Grandma turns to my mom. “There’s a girl there. A Greene girl. Noah’s been rumored to spend some time with her.”

How the hell did she get wind of that? Although it didn’t help that a few months ago, she called me to pick up some drunk guy at a bar and drive him home. I was with Mandi that day and she walked over to Truth or Dare with me.

“Really?” My mom’s interest perks up.

“She’s really cute. I’m friends with her stepgrandma.”

My mom and grandma seem to be getting along. My dad scowls from his chair, but there’s hope inside me for the first time in over a decade. I need to do whatever it takes to keep this progress going.

“So maybe there will be grandchildren in my future after all?” Mom says with a huge smile.

“Doubtful,” I answer.
