“She comes from a big family. I’m sure she would want a big family of her own.”

I raise my hand. “Can we talk about Grandma’s health now, please and stop worrying about me?”

“I’d like to meet her sometime,” my mom says.

I roll my eyes, but then I consider that for once, tension isn’t filling the room. Well, besides the tension coming from my dad, but if my mom and grandma started to talk again, surely he’d come around. We could put this family feud to rest and I wouldn’t be pulled apart in the middle.

“Well…” I tighten my hand around my neck and squeeze. The idea inside my head is probably the last thing I should do.

“Maybe we’ll have a wedding to plan soon,” Grandma says. “Wouldn’t that be fun, Ursula?”

My mom’s entire face lights up. “Oh, a wedding.”

And that’s all it takes for the words to fly out of my mouth. “I’m engaged.”

Grandma struggles to sit up, and the brochure in my dad’s hands cascades to the floor.

My mom stares at me as though I just said I’d secretly gone to med school and become a doctor. “What?”

“Well, I haven’t officially asked her yet.” Not a lie. “But I was going to… tonight… until all of this.” Okay, total lie.

“Is it Mandi Greene?” Grandma asks.

“Yes.” It’s a bald-faced lie, but I would never take it back after seeing excitement fill her entire face.

“Do you think she’ll say yes?” my mom asks.

“Um… I hope so.” Which I really do hope, since I just put us in this situation that I have to figure a way to get us out of at some point.

“How exciting! You go. We’ll stay here and take care of your grandma. Go ask the woman you love to be yours.” My mom shoos me with her hand.

“We’re staying?” my dad says and throws up his hands.

I bend and kiss Grandma’s cheek. “You okay if I leave?”

“Go!”

“Thanks.” I say goodbye and leave the hospital room.

It isn’t until I’m driving back toward the inn that what I did really sets in.
