There’s a knock on my door right before I’m about to leave the inn with Mandi to go over to her parents’ house. They’ve agreed to host her family and mine with a barbeque.

I open the door, and without even saying hello, Mandi hands me a stack of notecards. “We need to do a quick quiz before we’re sent to the wolves.”

“Quick quiz? Well, Miss Greene, I didn’t think there would be a pop quiz today and I’m afraid I’m very unprepared.”

She laughs and starts remaking my bed since I declined maid service.

“Stop making the bed,” I say.

She raises her hands and blows out a breath. She looks pretty in a sundress that accentuates her breasts. She’s wearing her red hair down and wavy, making me imagine it laid out on my pillow after I’ve already taken her a couple of times in a night. “I’m so nervous. I swear my sisters will see through this scam when they spend time with us.”

I take her hands. Her ring glistens even in the dim light because she takes great care of it. “They won’t see through any of it. We just need to be affectionate. You have to be comfortable with my arm around you, with me taking your hand and kissing you.” I wanted to broach the subject before, but I didn’t want her to think too hard about it, stress too hard about it.

“Kissing?” Her hazel eyes widen.

“Well, we’re going to get married, and this isn’t the eighteenth century, Mandi.” I chuckle.

She nods and stares out the window for a second. “Yeah, that makes sense. So what? Do you want to practice?”

I laugh and look at the notecards on the edge of the bed. Picking them up, I flip through them. “Well, I do think that me really kissing you and you not being uncomfortable is more important than me knowing your favorite ice cream flavor.”

“I’m a sherbet girl. Rainbow.”

I can’t fight my grin. I go sit next to her on the bed. “Mine’s chocolate chip.”

“That’s good to know.” She nods. I can tell she’s nervous.

“In case your family ever takes us to an ice cream shop, you mean?”

She giggles and her tongue slides out to wet her bottom lip. “You never know when the question might come up.”

I cradle her face. “Mandi?”

“Uh-huh?” She swallows hard.

“I’m going to kiss you now.”

“Okay,” she whispers.

Our eyes meet and I lean forward, taking my time. The second my lips touch hers, my body only desires more. More of whatever she’ll give me. I press my lips to hers, unsure if I should slide my tongue between her pouty lips. Would that be too far? After all, I don’t think Mandi nor myself are ones for public displays of affection.

I draw back before I push her further than she’d want to go.

“You good?” I ask.

She nods and touches her lips. “Yeah.” Her voice is breathy, and I can’t help the male pride that has me wanting to puff out my chest.

“So now when I have to kiss you, you won’t go stiff because my lips have already been on yours.” I smile and rise from the bed.

She does too but grabs the notecards. “Let’s just go over some of these on the way.”

“I’d rather get to know you the old-fashioned way.”

“Well, we don’t have time to do it the old-fashioned way.”

We walk out of my room, and I lock it before going downstairs.

“So, my favorite board game is The Game of Life,” she says over her shoulder.
