“I know I don’t know your taste well, Mandi, but the dress suits you,” Ursula says with a kind smile.

“I couldn’t agree more,” Midge says from where she stands next to Ursula. I smile, because I’m doing all this for them. “I love that you aren’t wearing white.”

“Your grandson took my granddaughter’s virginity?” Ethel looks at Midge. “That’s why she’s not wearing white, isn’t it?”

“I don’t think people go by that anymore, Grandma,” Chevelle says.

I hold up my hand. “Enough with the accusations, and no, Noah did not take my virginity.” Seriously, they act like I was some old maid until Noah came along.

“Although watching the two of you kiss was intimate enough. I swear I saw tongue,” Nikki says.

“Oh please, you and Logan used to go to second base with us in the room. You guys were disgusting.” Chevelle pretends she’s sticking her finger down her throat.

“Which is how baby Noah came along so fast.” Posey laughs.

“Says you. At least I was married.” Nikki narrows her eyes at our sister.

“Stop it, girls.” Mom looks at Ursula. “I’m sorry about this.”

Ursula only smiles and waves my mom off.

“Okay, I’m not completely sold on the champagne color, but jeez, guys. Cool it.” I give them all a look I hope makes it clear that they need to be on their best behavior with Noah’s mom here.

“Yes, this is just option one,” Brena says. “Now we’ll go try on option two.”

I make my way back to the changing room and hear Nikki and Posey bickering some more while Dori asks for more champagne.

Ethel asks Midge if she thinks Noah might hurt me on the wedding night. “He’s so tall and big,” she says.

“You’re crazy if you think they haven’t done it yet,” Chevelle says. I can practically see her rolling her eyes.

Normally she’d be right, but I haven’t had sex with Noah. Now that Ethel brings it up, I bet he is pretty big… like, everywhere.

“Not everyone is as free as you, Chevelle,” my mom says.

“Midge is. That’s why I love her.”

“Oh, thanks, Chevelle.” Midge’s voice is warm.

And then I’m in the changing room and, thank goodness, away from the drama.

The second dress is more lace than beads and it covers my entire torso, but it’s sleeveless. It’s a little more classic and prudish, but it is beautiful, and I do love the white.

When I rejoin the group, the girls are looking at bridesmaid dresses in the corner of the shop.

“What color are we wearing?” Posey asks.

I walk up to the pedestal. “I don’t have one in mind yet.”

“Well, you have to figure it out,” my mom says. “We need to make sure it goes with the table linens and napkins and—”

“Can we please focus on me and the wedding dress?” I’m a little exasperated at this point.

“Yes!” They all hurry back over and stand around me.

“Yeah, no,” Chevelle says. “You look… not like you. Too closed off or something.”

“I like the other one,” Nikki says.
