“Francois?” Mandi says with a lilt to her voice as if to say he’s the groom and it’s what he wants.

“I’ll find some way to fancy them up,” he grumbles.

“Great. Thank you.” Mandi leaves the kitchen.

I’m about to follow when Frank stops me.

“You know, Noah, that a lady should never sacrifice. The man who loves her should make sure she gets what she wants. If you truly love her, you won’t allow her to skimp on her own enjoyment.” He raises both eyebrows.

I feel as if I’m stuck in a game of Clue and people keep eyeing me suspiciously as though I’m the murderer.

When I make it outside of the kitchen, Mandi is talking to a couple. I slide in next to her.

“Hello, I’m Noah, Mandi’s fiancé.” I put my hand out.

The woman looks shocked, inspecting Mandi’s left hand immediately. They congratulate us both.

I allow them to have some small talk before extracting Mandi from the conversation. “If you’ll excuse us, we have a cake tasting to get to.”

We say our goodbyes, but once we’re in the office, Mandi doesn’t grab her purse. “Francois is making desserts.”

“We need a cake to cut. Every wedding has a cake to cut. Plus, I’m pretty sure you’ll be ready to shove it in my face by then.”

She laughs. “It’s a was—”

I place my finger on her lips. “It’s not a waste. It’s our wedding.” I lower my voice to a whisper. “Fake or not, we’re going all out. Do you understand? Now, I’m going to drive you over to Lake Starlight, and if she can’t fit us in, I’m going to offer to pay double.” She opens her mouth, but I shake my head. “You are going to have everything you want. No more arguments, okay?”

She nods.

“And you do not make decisions without me like that menu you made, okay?”

She nods.

“Good. Now let’s go.”

I take her hand and we walk out of SunBay Inn. I’m determined to make this the dream wedding Mandi always wanted—real or not.
