“I’m sure you’ll do fine. I mean, Fisher is a hard man to please and they hung a picture right above their couch.”

He blows out a breath. “We’ll see. I guess if I have to hightail it out of town after the wedding, you’ll understand—I took crap pictures.”

He laughs, but the mention of him leaving Sunrise Bay leaves a gaping hole in my chest. I cannot imagine him not being here.

“Who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy it.” I raise my eyebrows.

He shakes his head. “I’ve never been someone who can sit still for very long.”

We walk out to his truck as his words ring in my head. It’s crystal clear that there is no future for us, so what am I to do with all these feelings I have for him? Will they go away after he leaves, or in a year when we divorce? I haven’t met a man like Noah before, and at this point, I don’t think I’ll ever meet a second.

That Wednesday,I’m going over everything with my staff before Noah and I leave. The fact that I might not have cell service while we’re gone is scary, but they handled it when I went to Hawaii. Surely they can handle this.

Noah walks in after packing up the truck and stands idly by as I give all my last-minute instructions.

“Now go.” Trina shoos me away with her hand. “Go have a nice getaway before the wedding.”

“I’m not sure sleeping in a tent is a nice getaway, but it will be nice not to have to think about wedding plans for two whole days.” I glance over my shoulder at Noah, who is standing with his hands shoved in his pockets. “Call me if you need me.”

“We will,” Trina says. “Now force her to leave, Noah.”

He pulls me by the back of my shirt, twists me around, and throws me over his shoulder, fireman style.

“Noah!” I say in shock.

He opens the door of the inn and carries me to the truck. “I fear if I don’t take you this way, you’ll keep delaying our trip.”

“Put me down.” I can’t help but fear how much I weigh on his shoulder. “This can’t be comfortable for you.”

“You’re nothing. Have you seen my muscles? I kind of like you in this position.”

His ass is right at my eye level and I kind of like it too, if I’m being honest.

I realized a long time ago that not every man could carry me like this and having sex with a man holding me up against a wall might be out due to my size. Not that I care, there are plenty of other positions, but I’m not naive to the limitations. But Noah challenges all my assumptions because he handles me with ease.

He drops me to my feet in front of the truck’s passenger door. Opening the door, he waves me in. “Your chariot, ma’am.”

I pretend to glare at him, although I kind of loved him carrying me like that. “Thank you, but I could’ve used my two feet.”

“Believe me, you’ll be on those two feet for most of our hike today.” He shuts the door and I raise my hand, but he’s rounding the truck.

As soon as the door opens, I say, “Hike?”

He laughs and starts the truck. Looking at me, he reaches across me, takes the seat belt, and straps me in. “How else are we going to be remote for two days? Don’t worry, it’s beautiful.”

“And you’re not going to kill me, right? Because in all honesty, you should wait until after we’re married. You can have the inn then. Although it doesn’t make a ton of money.”

He chuckles, pulling out of the parking lot. “The way that mind of your works, Mandi. I fucking love it.”

“Is that a compliment?”

He looks at me from the corner of his eye. “Yeah, it’s a compliment.”

We drive in silence for a few minutes, getting farther away from Sunrise Bay. “Truth?”

“Yeah,” he answers and turns down the radio.

“I don’t travel a lot. The Hawaii trip was a sort of one-off. Something my family planned. I’m not used to being away from the inn, and I realize now that it’s kind of sad that I live in this amazing state and haven’t ever really explored it.”
