Amelia’s face grew bright red.

“Mistress? But I…”

I felt anger boiling up inside of me. Mr. Allen began to speak rapidly, his voice full of venom.

“Why else would he bring you here? We all know the Lord’sreputation. He uses women like dishrags and throws them to the side when he’s bored of them. You should be wise to realize that, cousin, if it’s not too late for you already.”

“Richard!” Amelia cried, her expression shocked. “What are you implying?”

“Oh, please.” He continued. “You expect me to believe that he hasn’t already defiled you?”

I stepped towards the man, my own glare fixed squarely on his face.

“You seem to know quite a bit about me, Mr. Allen. And I will not lie to you, my reputation, as you describe it, is correct.”

I felt my fists closing in anger.

“But I have never touched your cousin.” I continued, my eyes locked on the young man’s.

He stared up at me, only a few feet away.

“She has done nothing wrong. In fact, she took great pains – possibly risking her very own reputation – to be here today. Foryou.I do not care what you think of me in the least. But, I will not allow you to speak to her in such a way.”

“You cannot allow or disallow me anything-” He stammered, his face growing red.

I smiled.

“Ah, Mr. Allen, as your superior… as the Viscount Marsden, I canindeed.”

I watched his smug expression contort into frustrated anger.

“However, it just so happens that I care little for title or decorum. I will not force you to address me in the proper fashion. But I draw the line when it comes to Miss Allen. Treat her as the lady she is… or I will force you to.”

I stood at least half a foot taller than him. He might not have cared for my title or pedigree, even my wealth, but when it came to physical prowess, there was no question who would win. I was simply on top.

“I want to leave, my Lord.” Amelia suddenly said, her voice angry.

Richard Allen looked over at her in shock.

“Surely, cousin, you cannot think of leaving withhim, after what has occurred-”

“If my reputation is ruined, then it does not matter. I would much rather spend my time with the Viscount than here, with you, after you have insulted my honor and questioned my virtue.”

Her words were biting. She turned to me, her expression resolute.

“Do not try to convince me otherwise, my Lord. I desire to leave. Withyou.”

I was still glaring down at Mr. Allen. I slowly relaxed my fists, feeling the remnants of my anger course through me.

“Very well, Miss Allen. We shall depart.”

Richard Allen looked from Amelia to me, anger and shock raging in his eyes.

“I will return soon to see my uncle’s improvement, Richard.” Amelia said, her voice devoid of emotion. “Please write immediately to Lord Marsden’s residence if any complications develop.”

And with that, we departed the Allen’s modest Gracechurch St home… leaving Richard Allen fuming in our wake.
