“This isyourfault! You ruined the honor of our cousin, turned her into a common courtesan, and now you’ve taken her!”

I instinctively put my arms up to shield myself from his body, my mind reeling. I felt anger pulse through me at his words.

How dare he insult Amelia.

I was moving towards him when Nicholas’s booming voice reverberated through the small room.

“Enough! Amelia is in danger! This is no time for a pathetic fight amongst boys!”

All I heard was,Amelia is in danger, and I froze.

“Where is she? Tell us where you’ve taken her!” Richard yelled, jumping towards me again.

This time, he barely made it a foot before his father pushed him aside.

Nicholas thrust the paper he was holding into my own hands, an angry and desperate look in his eyes.

“Amelia sent word she would be here by 10 am. She never came; instead, someone nailed this to our door. By the time we had gotten to it, whoever it was had departed. Does it mean anything to you?”

I looked quickly down at the paper, my eyes scanning the words rapidly.

To the relations of Amelia Allen:

I have taken the girl as my own.

I am bringing her to the real house of her former master, so that she can see who he really is… and the secret that he hides.

And then, I will expose it to the world, ruining everything he holds dear. Just as he did to me.

I felt the world drop out from under me.

The words were purposely vague, but the meaning was obvious to me. It was as clear as day.

I looked up at Nicholas, my hands balling into fists.

“Lord Turley has taken Amelia to my mother’s estate. He intends to exact revenge on me for past offences.”

Louisa gasped and Richard sneered. Nicholas just watched me, his expression unreadable.

“Go then. Bring her back safely. It is the least you owe her.”

I nodded, understanding the weight of his words.

I had gotten Amelia into this mess.

Who had offended Lord Turley in the first place?

Me.

It was my selfish, immature, rakish behavior that had started this entire debacle. I had been so impulsive… so impetuous. Ruining Juliana’s virtue… and for what? For hedonism and nihilism?

And then, I had involved Amelia in all of this without a thought.

My dear, angelic Amelia.

I suddenly remembered how she’d come to me, the night before, warning of Lord Turley stalking outside of the townhouse. I had completely brushed her off, as if she was ridiculous.

And now, he had taken her.
