I looked into his ocean blue eyes, and I believed him.

Together, we were unstoppable.

And then, we jumped.

As my body hit the cold water, I knew that something was wrong. Will was supposed to be there, right next to me, wasn’t he? We were supposed to swim to the shore together, laughing, and then jump again. And again and again. That’s how the memory had happened in real life, anyways. Somehow, I knew that in the back of my head.

But I was alone, and the water was churning faster and faster around me. I was sinking into a dark blackness, and I couldn’t breath nor swim. My hands and feet felt frozen, and the water was choking me.

And then suddenly, I was awake.

I couldn’t see, but the world was no longer a black abyss. There was an itchy velvet fabric concealing my eyes, but around the edges of my vision, I could make out the faintest warmth of flickering light.

I struggled to move and found that my hands were tied behind my back.

“You’re finally awake.”

A voice emerged from a few feet away. Before I could trace it, I felt gloved hands hastily shove the blindfold from my eyes.

“Lord Turley?” I said, staring at the man in front of me.

Indeed, it was unmistakably him. I felt my mouth drop open in sheer disbelief.

In return, he grinned maliciously at my baffled expression.

“Good evening. I heard you dreaming… thinking of that abominable prick, were you?”

Abominable prick…did he mean Will? What?

I was speechless.

He laughed.

“I had a hard time believing he would choose you, of all girls, but he is a pathetic man. A pathetic man has to settle…”

I felt my face reddening as the situation began to become clearer. Lord Turley had clearly kidnapped me from the steps of Will’s Mayfair townhouse. I was now in a carriage with him, going who knows where.

Sure, Will had offended Turley earlier in the season. I knew that they had a feud.

But… kidnapping me?

The entire situation was ridiculous. For a second, that made me feel less afraid. Turley was an idiot, that much had always been obvious to me.

But then, I started to shiver. The look on his face was insane. These were the actions of a madman, not someone with rational thinking capabilities. And a man who was insane… he would do anything, wouldn’t he?

I swallowed nervously.

“Where are we going?” I asked, glancing furtively at the carriage windows.

It was clear by the bumps below us that we were rocketing quickly down a country road, full of stones and potholes. But the windows were covered with thick drapes. The only light in the carriage was from two flickering candles, sputtering behind glass sconces.

Turley grinned again.

“We’re on our way to Bedham House, your Lord Marsden’s secret country estate. It’s a recent discovery I made, actually.”

I just stared back at him.

Bedham House? I had never heard of it.
