I felt something snap inside of me, but I didn’t attack.

Not yet.

“Or else?”

Lord Turley grinned.

“I’ll tell everyone about your mother. She’ll die in shame… and it will be all your fault.”

I didn’t hesitate. One moment I was standing a half dozen feet from Turley, and the next I was lunging towards him, my hands stretched towards his throat.

Chapter Nineteen

Amelia

Icouldn’tbelievewhatwas happening.

I had been brought here by Turley as revenge against Will.

But that wasn’t all.

Turley had brought me to the home of Will’s mother… Will’s mother who was assumed to bedead.

Well, she was certainly alive, if one could call it that. Her breaths were rhythmic and her eyes wide and glassy, staring into space, but she didn’t rouse – not even at the sound of her own son’s voice.

I had hoped that Will would come, and he had. The moment he’d burst through the door, I’d felt an immense sense of safety and relief sweep through me. Turley was a maniac, that much was certain, but I had no doubt that Will could overcome him.

Despite everything that had happened recently, deep down, I knew that I could rely on Will to be there for me. Perhaps the person who Will had been, before he’d became the rake I had come to know recently, had never disappeared. Perhaps the real Will was just… in hiding for a while.

And now, I understood why he had ever become such a rake to begin with.

I saw the tortured look in his eyes as he glanced at his mother, and it was easy to imagine the pain he had felt for years at her suffering. I remembered the way he had refused to talk about her, and the way he had stared at her portrait as if looking at a ghost.

Suddenly, it all made sense.

He had been grieving the loss of his mother for years. Even if she was technically still alive, she was clearly lost to the world. I knew, without a doubt, that he had probably tried to help her. Tried to bring her back. But undoubtedly, he had not succeeded.

And because of that, he had surely blamed himself… and turned to drinking and other bad behaviors to distract himself from the despair.

I felt my heart growing even fonder for him. All I wanted to do was to ensure him that he was loved… and that it wasn’t his fault. But I was tied to the divan, forced to watch as Turley gloated in Will’s pain.

When Turley announced his plan to take me as his own, I felt shivers run down my spine. And then I watched in horror as Will lunged towards him, a look of pure anger on his face.

Turley yelled as Will’s hands wrapped around his neck. They struggled, Will pushing Turley towards the wall. For a moment, it looked as if Turley was going to overcome him. I saw his hand reach around Will’s back, a knife in his hand…

I screamed as the blade aimed for Will’s neck.

Just as Turley was about to stab him, Will suddenly pushed him backwards in an immense show of strength. The knife flew out of Turley’s hand, falling on the ground in front of me. My arms were still tied behind my back, but I was able to drag it towards me with my feet.

“Will! His knife!” I yelled, looking over at Will with terrified eyes.

He was there in a flash, leaving Turley stumbling behind him. Will picked up the knife deftly and, for the briefest moment, we made eye contact. It was the first time he had really made eye contact with me the entire occasion. I saw that his eyes were clear… he was sober. There was pain there, of course, and shame.

But there was also love.

Turley suddenly lunged at Will again, and I cried out in warning. Will turned, brandishing the knife, and threw Turley to the ground. Standing above him, he put his foot above Turley’s neck.

“This ends now, Turley.”
