Chapter 14

Piper

As soon as the sunset on one of the last days of my period, I found myself creeping over to my bedroom door, pressing my ear to it as I listened for any sound of the masters. Sadly, they were quieter than most human men. I barely could hear voices, let alone footsteps when they went by.

I almost opened the door one time when I thought one of them had stopped outside of it. My hand sat on the door handle, my face shoved against the door, listening and waiting to see what they would do. When they didn't seem to make any kind of move to knock on my door, I found my hand turning the knob. Irritatingly enough, the moment I pulled the door open, they were gone without even a whiff of them left behind.

Boredom aside, I was lonely. I wanted some kind of interaction. Human, vampire, anything. Darren still brought my meals to my room, but he only ever stayed around for a few moments before disappearing to do God only knew what in the rest of the house, probably doing my chores along with his own.

A part of me was guilty about making him do my work while I still got paid for it, but then I remembered it was him who made me stay in time-out and then demanded I get over it.

Oh well, only a few more hours and I'll be home free.

I sighed and clicked the remote at the TV as I turned it off and stood. I'd taken to wearing my pajamas all the time because no one else was going to see me. I'd walk around in just my underwear if I weren't hyper-aware of the masters being close by. Part of me hoped they would come knock on my door, and then I'd have a reason to talk to them. The other part remembered how Rayne had reacted in the kitchen.

I shivered on my way to the bathroom.

It had been exhilarating and frightening all at once. One, to know that the redhead was that affected by my blood to have to restrain himself so much. Two, the hot need in his eyes made my own body heat up and slick with desire. Three, if I let him bite me would he be able to stop? Antoine had done a good job of reminding me of just how dangerous they could be, and while it was arousing to think of them getting out of control with me, it was also a completely horrible idea.

With that in mind, I went about brushing my teeth and letting out small sighs of despair. I looked in the mirror and snorted. Wasn't I a sight? My blonde hair was pulled up in a messy bun, but since I hadn't bothered fixing it up today, it was lopsided and falling out. My eyes were dull from too much sleep, and I was pretty sure my clothes were the same ones I'd worn two days ago... or were they?

I didn't know. The days had blurred together so that I no longer even bothered to look at the clock. I only remembered to look at what time it was when Darren brought me my food. Which he should be doing any minute now.

I finished brushing my teeth, spat, and rinsed. Unable to handle my disgusting hair any longer, I decided to jump in the shower. I turned the water on until it scorched my skin and just stood under the spray. The water pounded against my shoulders, loosening up the muscles there, and I tipped my head back to let it soak into my hair. Then, after pouring a generous amount of shampoo in my hand, I began to scrub my hair vigorously.

Halfway through scrubbing, there was a knock on the door. My head jerked up which caused soap to get in my eyes. Wincing in pain, I shouted, "Come in," as I tried to get the soap out of my eyes. I rubbed and whimpered at the stinging pain. The door opened and closed in the other room. "Just put the tray on the table. I'll be out in a second, I want to talk to you."

I grabbed the loofa and quickly scrubbed my body as I didn’t want to keep Darren waiting. Yes, I was that desperate for someone to talk to.

"I wasn't aware you missed me that much."

Wynn's voice startled me. I grabbed for the shower curtain, only intending to peek around the corner of it to be sure I'd heard him right. However, the curtain wasn't that sturdy, and just then, my foot slipped on the soapy bottom of the tub. I held on for dear life as I put all my weight on the curtain... and that’s when it tore free from the curtain rod. With a banshee-like wail, I went flying out of the bathtub and toward the hard tile floor of the bathroom.

Quick as lightning, Wynn was at my side. His arms wrapped around me and the shower curtain, keeping me from breaking my head open on the floor.

I gasped and stared up at him. "Uh, thanks."

"You're welcome." Wynn's lips curled into an amused grin as his blue eyes twinkled down at me. "You really shouldn't keep your bedroom door unlocked. Anyone could just walk in."

I frowned. "I thought you were Darren."

Wynn brushed the hair out of my face, and his eyes moved down over my very wet and very exposed naked body. "Lucky him."

My body warmed as I struggled against his hold, reaching for my towel in the process. Wynn smirked and didn't even bother pretending like he wasn't checking me out as I escaped his grasp, stumbling as I clutched my towel. The desire in his eyes was obvious as well as the bulge in his pants.

Now with a few feet between us, I shoved my hair behind my ears, holding my towel around me tightly as I searched for something to say. "I thought you were all spending the week at the club?"

I didn't know much about the club Darren claimed the masters were spending their week at. I'd tried to look it up online, but the website for The Viper had been sparse for information with only their logo and a phone number and address. If I had been braver, I'd have driven up to Atlanta myself and checked it out. However, since it was a vampire club and I have already grounded to my bedroom because of my period, the smarter part of me decided this would just be one mystery they kept to themselves.

“I was.” Wynn leaned against the bathroom door, his gaze moving from my body briefly to meet my eyes. He stroked his thumb across his bottom lip and flashed me a fanged grin. "But it is hard to enjoy the company of such subpar women when we have such a goddess here at home."

I flushed at his flattery. "Stop it."

"It's true." Wynn moved away from the door and sauntered over to me like a panther on the prowl. He wore a pair of tight black jeans that hung low on his hips. His button-down shirt was the color of his eyes a royal blue that made his already intriguing eyes even more vibrant. His tattoo of the house sigil flashed beneath the shirt where he'd left it unbuttoned at his chest.

I held my hand not holding my towel up to stop him from coming any closer. My fingers brushed his cool chest which was in some ways even worse than having him close. My breath caught, and my eyes flicked from his face to his chest and back. I started to pull my hand away, but his long fingers grabbed mine to keep them there.

"You can touch me, Piper." The way Wynn said my name made my knees weak and my heart pound. It was like he was savoring a decadent chocolate cake and he couldn't wait for seconds.
