"A bit of this and that," I answered vaguely.

This was not the thing to say to a lawyer, apparently. It only made his suspicion of us deepen.

"Stop messing with him, Antoine." Piper appeared in the doorway with Wynn at her side. Jack pushed from the table to stand. His eyes took note of the arm Wynn had sitting low on Piper's hip. Piper smiled at Jack as she walked up to the table. "Antoine does a lot of real estate investments. Mostly overseas. He's the reason Darren and I were in Seabrick in the first place."

Too much information. Piper was giving too much information to this too suspicious lawyer.

"Real estate, huh?" Jack turned his gaze back to me. "Sounds kind of boring." His gaze slid around the room. "Obviously pays well, though."

I shrugged nonchalantly. "This house has been in the family for centuries. I cannot claim it all to my success."

"And the rest of you?" Jack peered around the table. "Do you do real estate too?"

Drake grinned and laced his fingers as he made himself more comfortable in his chair. "Among other things."

Piper moved around the room, taking the empty seat on the other side of Jack. Wynn sat next to her. Only one chair remained unclaimed. Piper noticed immediately. "Where's Allister?"

Drake snorted. "Who knows? He was gone moments after we woke."

Frowning, Piper didn't question him further. We couldn’t risk discussing too much family business in front of the stranger that was Jack Biggs.

"There's more of you?" Jack questioned, surprised.

"My twin, Allister," Drake explained but didn't give any more details than that.

"I'm surprised you could pull yourself away from this house, Piper." Jack turned to her with a sly grin. "That you would come slum it in Seabrick when you have all this waiting for you." He implied more than he was saying, and Piper knew it. She ducked her head, her cheeks turning a lovely shade of pink.

"I do what I'm told."

Marcus snorted.

Piper's head jerked in his direction, and she tossed a green bean at him. "Hey, I listen..." she shifted in her seat as all of us stared at her and then muttered, "when I want to."

Jack chuckled. "That sounds like the Piper, I know." He leaned into her, his hand reaching out to touch her hand.

Too familiar. This human shouldn’t know her at all. I blamed myself for it: myself and the vampire hunters.

She laughed politely and shifted her hand out of his reach.

Good girl.

Piper shot me a look as if she could read my mind. She couldn't, of course, but still, she knew me too well.

I arched a brow at her.

"So, how long will we be graced with your presence?" I asked, gaining me a warning look from Piper.

"Only the night." Jack didn't notice the exchange and was back to being his handsome lawyer self. "I only came to make sure Piper was alright. I have to get back to the office before my clients start to throw a fit. I swear, it's almost like having children." He chuckled and gazed around the table as if we were supposed to understand. When no one laughed with him, Jack turned to Wynn. "None of you are married? No kids?"

Wynn rolled his head in a lazy sort of way toward Jack. "No. No wife. No kids."

"None of you?" Jack pointed around the table. No one answered him. "A house full of bachelors, huh?" He huffed a laugh, and it wasn't happy. "How do you handle all the testosterone?"

Piper shrugged, and that pretty blush on her face appeared once more. "I get by."

Jack did not like that reaction at all.

I wondered how many women had actually ever told this man, no? Piper was appealing. Attractive. A challenge. I could see why he wanted her. Except there were plenty of other women he could be obsessed with, why Piper? Had she done something to make him think she was interested?
