“No, but I’d have to find a another human to help if we needed another spirit contacted, and I’d prefer not to have to learn any new names.” He nodded, an oddly old-world gesture, before casting a look of pure hostility at Troy. Still, he said nothing else before walking out.

Troy’s gaze remained locked on Kase until the black car pulled away, and right then he looked every bit the dog Kase had called him, as though he were watching a mailman drive away.

When he had left, however, Troy’s shoulders lifted once then lowered, as though he took one deep breath and let it go, before he turned toward me.

“Out.”

He frowned. “Ava—”

“I am not doing this with you tonight.”

“We need to talk about this.”

“No, we really don’t.” I gestured toward the door, and when I walked closer to him, he backed off.

Did he not want to get close to me, or did he think I wouldn’t want to get close to him after realizing what he was?

It didn’t really matter, as long as he was leaving.

“What about what I found out about your missing person?”

“Tomorrow. For tonight, take your werewolf ass home because I am marinating myself in hot water until nothing can bother me.”

I advanced on him as he backed up until he ended up on my front porch. He set his hand out on the door to keep me from slamming it, then leaned down until he was far closer than he’d ever been before. “You will come over tomorrow morning, Ava, and wewilltalk.”

My breath caught at the way he spoke, at that intensity in his gaze I’d never seen before, the way that his overbearing attitude had grown a new, dangerous edge. I leaned in, drawn by the heat of him, but as soon as I did, I wondered what the fuck I was thinking.

I stepped back and closed the door in his face.

I was old enough to know that a hot bath wasalwaysbetter than whatever he was offering.
