My plan was to pretend with my tea until the heat went away, then take myself to bed with my favorite vibrator and remind myself that I did not need any of the men who seemed to be orbiting me.

Noneof them vibrated, which made them a distant second in the race for my heart—or more honestly, my vagina.

A knock at the door made me drop my head back.

Again?

When I got there, I found Hunter standing on my porch, his eyebrow lifted. “Decided to put up wards, huh? And you sure were not fucking around about them, either.”

I leaned against the doorframe, annoyed to find he looked even more handsome than he had the last time. How it was possible, I wasn’t sure. That long hair of his was down and messy and it made him look like some rebel bad boy who I shouldn’t let in but who I really, really wanted to. “Well, it kept you out, so it seems like it was worth it.”

He snorted and mirrored my stand, leaning against the open screen door. “If I wanted past them that badly, I could. Sure, this is the Fort Knox of wards—kudos to the mage who set it up—but I’ve got my ways.”

“So why haven’t you?”

“I figured I’d ask real nicely, and you’d let me in.”

The worst part of his words was how sure he was about them. The arrogance in them, the way he looked at me as if he knew I wanted him, that it was only a matter of time, all made me again wonder just what he was.

“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you, butthatwon’t be happening.”

“Sure. Whatever you say.” The assholewinkedat me, as if it were all some funny joke between us. “Any sight of what came looking for you the other night?”

“What was it?”

He shrugged.

“You don’t know?”

“Not exactly. Believe it or not, I’m not an expert on every bad thing that crawls around in the shadows. I know it was looking for you and that if it had found you, it probably didn’t want to just sell you some cookies.”

“How did you know about it at all?Whatare you?”

“It’s considered rude to ask that.”

I leaned closer to him but kept the ward threshold between us. “I am so tired of people keeping what they are from me.”

“Does it really matter? I mean, in the scheme of things, knowing what someone is doesn’t tell you anything. Humans can be just as treacherous as anything else, so what’s the point with the question?”

His eyes danced with a certain amusement, but deeper than that?

Flames.

They reminded me of the tattoos that swirled over his arms and throat. How was that possible?

The more I saw him, the more I doubted those tattoos had been put there by any artist. They had an otherworldly quality that made them seem darker, impossible and almost as though they moved on his skin.

We stood so close that only the thinnest barrier remained between us—the ward. No doubt if I let him in, we’d end up in bed.

And who could blame me?

Look at him!

He was the poster boy for a man I wasn’t supposed to want. He looked like any wet-dream-created biker, and I was suddenly very aware of my entire body.

The last quickie I’d had—because I tended to stick with no-strings sex—replayed in my mind, and I was sure that would pale compared to what he could give me.

“Let me in,” he all but purred in a voicesoseductive and tempting that I nearly did so.
