I tore away from the sheet-covered form and stared down. “I thought there were six victims.”

“There were. That was a heart attack.”

I twisted on my heel to stare at him. “Thatwas a heart attack? You’re sure?”

Conner came over and picked up the chart that hung from a hook at the end of the table. He flipped through the pages. “Yeah, heart attack.”

Everything inside me shivered, an anxiety and fear I couldn’t put into words. I grasped the handle of a small door on the wall of freezers and pulled it one open. Inside was another table, but I didn’t need to pull it out. Instead, I grasped the foot and followed the trail.

Nothing.

Conner reached for me, but I flung his grasp off. Ihadto know. Again and again I performed the test, careful not to venture too deep, to be trapped by that void again, but it was always the same.

In a room full of dead bodies, all of whom died at different times, different causes, all unrelated, their spirits were missing.

This wasn’t a matter of one person or a few supernaturals who seemed to be possessed.

Spirits were being torn away, and that was something that could destroyeverything.
