Chapter Fifteen

I leaned forward and hacked. It wasn’t ladylike and it wasn’t pretty, but damn it, I had Olin ash in my lungs.

And everywhere else.

“Can’t you just magic this away?” I complained as I handed my keys to Grant to open my front door.

“Sorry, but magic is a limited resource. I can’t use it for frivolous things.”

“Getting dead vampire out of my cleavage isn’t frivolous!”

He chuckled as he opened my door then hung the keys on a hook there. “Think of magic like a bowl. Each time I use it, it takes some out. Do we want to risk an empty bowl if one of the other killer supernaturals shows up?”

I offered him a glare because his perfectly reasonable explanation annoyed me.

I didn’t wantperfectly reasonable explanations.I wanted to get fried Olin out of my bra.

“I’m going to take a shower. I think I deserve that.”

“Do you need help reaching anywhere? I hear vampire ash can get into horribly frustrating places.” Grant lifted an eyebrow, his green eyes sparkling. If things were different, I might just have taken him up on it.

However, as it turned out, the whole dead person—super dead considering he was a vampire—parts on me killed my libido faster than thinking about Gran in the shower.

“Not a chance,” I muttered as I trudged to my master bath.

Grant could stay there. I doubted I could talk him into leaving anyway. No doubt I’d have a better shower not listening for every little sound.

Though, the biggest threat was gone, right?

Not that shadow.

The more I learned, the more I had to accept that whatever that was, it was at the root of this all. But what could possibly rip souls away? And for what purpose?

The water washed away the ash, but it wasn’t as simple as I’d hoped. Instead, it clumped, and no matter how much vanilla bodywash I used, I could still smell the distasteful scent of burning flesh.

I remained in the shower so long that the water started to go cold. Scrubbing every inch and crevasse of myself took time, and dammit, this wasn’t the sort of job one should skimp on. The last thing I wanted was to get into bed later and find a little leftover Olin trapped in the crease where my thigh met my crotch.

I took my sweet time drying my hair and dressing as well. The clock read two in the morning by the time I had finished everything, reminding me that these damn men in my life had not only put me in danger and gotten me wrapped up in things I didn’t want to deal with but had also entirely fucked my sleep hygiene.

Still, when I walked out of the bathroom, guess who lounged on my bed, spread out like the best buffet I’d ever salivated over?

“Hey there, shadow-girl.” Hunter’s gaze moved over my pajamas as if I were dressed head to toe in slutty leather.

“You disappear without a word for days. Do you have any idea how annoying that is?”

“I bet I could make you forgive me.” His words dripped lust and promise, and for one long moment…it tempted me. He had delivered the last time, and a few good orgasms always improved my temperament.

However, I knew damn well that Grant hadn’t sat on his hands in my living room. No doubt Kase was there, waiting, and somehow, having sex while they were out there was just too far.

“Nice try,” I said before walking past the bed—and him—and into the living room.

Sure enough, Grant lounged on the couch and Kase stood by the window.

The moment I walked in, Kase turned, raking his gaze over me as though to check for injuries. I ignored the ache in my ribs. It wasn’t that bad, and I wasn’t interested in him bleeding on me to fix it. I’d hadenoughvampire parts on me for one night.

“Told you she was fine,” Grant said.

“I hired you to keep her safe.”
