Chapter Seventeen

I turned, slapping a hand to my bleeding neck while Kase was up and off the bed, moving a lot quicker than he had before. In fact, he used the speed he’d had while fighting Troy.

The water running in the bathroom was accompanied by more spitting and…gargling?

I knelt on the bed, too shocked to go anywhere, while Kase acted as though my blood were some shitty liquor he had to grimace to get down.

How dare he!My confusion transformed to anger the longer I sat there, as I thought about it.

All the ideas of how this wassupposedto go swirled in my head. I’d read enough trashy books, had watched the corny movies that all promised Kase would want to bite me and become entirely enthralled by the taste of my blood.

He was supposed to be so turned on that we made passionate, crazy love right after. He was supposed to have to keep himself from taking too much, not spit and rinse like a girl after a blow job!

The water turned off and he walked out, but the full view of his naked body did nothing for me. Not to mention his erection had disappeared like a frightened turtle. A smudge of red he’d missed sat on his lip and reminded me of the topic at hand.

And the worst part? That lust wouldn’t go away! It was his stupid saliva that still affected me, that made my body heavy and needy and desperate, even after he’d soundly rejected me. It felt like an insult, mocking me even now.

“Sorry,” he said, but he didn’t look all that sorry. I suspected it was the way cheating men apologized. He was sorry I saw it, but he would sure as hell spit it out again if he were in the same position.

“I didn’t realize you had such fickle taste.” I stood, ready to storm out, but he moved quickly to the door to bar my way.

“You don’t taste right, Ava.”

“It’s blood. It doesn’t come in too many flavors.”

He shook his head. “The blood is to keep us strong, and because of that, we can taste death or illness on a person.Youtaste of death, Ava, as though you’ve placed one foot in the grave already. Once, when I was still young, I was trapped in a city, pursued by hunters. There was an old man there, dying of god-only-knew what. He had sores all over him, and he coughed as though he could expel his lungs. I fed from him because I had no choice, and you taste like that, like something already half-dead.” He shuddered, then took a deep breath as though centering himself. He caught my chin and made me look into his eyes. “Are you sick? Have you been checked recently? Do you feel ill?”

I swatted his hand. “Oh, like you care? You’re just mad your meal was screwed up.”

“No. I need to ensure you are healthy. Blood doesn’t lie, and yours tells me there is a serious issue with your health. Youwillgo to the doctor now. The coven has one on staff at the hospital, and I will arrange it.”

“I’m not sick!”

He narrowed his eyes. “You will go, or I will call Grant to take you. Should that not work, I will drag you there myself the moment the sun falls.” He leaned in until his face was just before mine.

I shoved his chest as hard as I could, because it wasn’t as though I could move him. “This was supposed to be different!”

He paused. “How so?”

“You sure made a lot of promises about not being able to control yourself.” I waved at his obviously uninterested cock. “But Mr. Flaccid there got scared off by a little blood. And men complain about blue balls.”

He pressed his lips together.Oh, he doesn’t like being called out? Too bad.“We can still have sex, Ava.” He came closer, sliding a hand around me, settling on my lower back. “We will just leave feeding off the table.”

I pulled away. “Oh, poor Kase will suffer through having sex with me to make up for the fact my blood isn’t good enough. I don’t think so.”

Creases formed between his eyebrows, and I had a feeling no one else in a very long time had managed to make him confused enough for that to happen. “You are honestly upset that I don’t wish to drink from you? That I’m worried about your health?”

“Yes. No.” I couldn’t quite decide. Yes, I was mad about it, even though I had no good reason to be. It felt like a man seeing me naked for the first time and losing his erection. Vampires weresupposedto want blood above all things, and yet he’d found mine lacking. It felt oddly personal, like a slight I couldn’t rebound from.

“Which is it?” His voice had taken on abored, condescending tone, as if he’d recognized I was being childish, and he no longer wished to humor me.

“How about ‘fuck you’. Does that one work?” I turned to leave, and again, he put himself between me and the door. Odd that he didn’t grab me, that he was careful to simply create a shield with himself.

“Are you so grossed out by my blood you can’t even touch me?”

“Don’t be foolish. I’m far stronger than you and don’t want to frighten you. You shouldn’t leave angry—there’s no need for all of this.”

“You told me to go to the hospital. I’m just being a good little pet.”
