Haylee reached for a jar with a dark substance inside it, nearly black. She opened it, then drew some out with her fingers. “This will speed the healing and numb the pain. It’ll be fine by nightfall.” She dragged her fingers over the marks, but as she’d promised, the pain faded.

In fact…the drag of her fingers was sort of nice. I looked at her, the bright red of her lipstick, the way her eyeliner and tattoos gave her a dangerous edge. She was beautiful.

Her lips quirked on one side. “I’ve got no idea what’s going on between you and Grant, but I’m not a jealous woman.”

I swallowed at the blatant offer, unable to deny a temptation there.

“We’re leaving,” Grant said, voice hard and leaving no room for refusal. He took my hand, careful to avoid the healing tattoos, and pulled me to my feet.

Once we were outside, he turned back to offer a glare to the tattoo place. “Good thing she’s the best, or I’d never come back.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “Are you jealous or something?” It seemed odd, since Grant had never shown the least bit of jealousy with the other men. Was this different somehow?

He crossed his arms before returning his gaze to mine. “Looks like I am.”

“Why her? Because she’s a woman?”

He snorted. “Hardly. Once you become immortal, things like that don’t mean a whole lot. Gender doesn’t matter the way it does to humans, and you get old enough to recognize that sexuality is a lot more fluid when you have such a long lifespan.”

“So what is it?”

He caught my chin, lifting my gaze to his, capturing my attention with those deep green eyes of his. “I’ve been through a lot with you, with Kase, Troy and Hunter. We’ve got…” He paused, as if searching for the right words. “A comfort. An understanding. A history.”

“And what does that mean?”

“It means I dislike the idea of that changing. Also, I know Hayleen. She enjoys the chase, the taste of someone with power, but little more than that. Besides, if she hurt you, I’d have to kill her, then I’d need to find a new tattoo artist. It doesn’t seem worth it.”

“Well, maybe I was going to get a few orgasms out of it, and those are worth a rather lot.”

Thatgot his attention. His pupils expanded as he took in a deep breath, a reminder of exactly how much I missed him. Just as quickly, he offered a smirk full of promise. “Well, if orgasms are your only concern, I’m pretty sure I can help with that…”

And while I didn’t always believe Grant was telling me truth, that was one statement I trusted fully.

Hunter smiled, that charming grin disarming me as it always did. Funny that a manthatdangerous could look so damned tempting.

He wasn’t like a snake, like Kase, with sharp lines that screamed danger. He wasn’t like Troy or Grant, either, who looked innocent enough to hide their vicious nature.

Instead, Hunter looked every bit as dangerous as he was, but in a way that was oddly endearing, like a lion with huge teeth but a fluffy mane.

Not that I hadn’t seen his other side, the dragon beast he changed into, but it didn’t bother me. How could it, after seeing whatIchanged into?

I was petty, but I wasn’t a hypocrite.

“Hey there, shadow-girl,” he said as I entered the room he’d given me an address for. It seemed that a lot of my life consisted of being sent to random addresses without explanation.

Worse?

I usually followed them. This time, it was an empty house, one without furniture or personal effects beyond a blanket tossed on the floor in a corner.

“Did you sleep here?”

Hunter peered over at the blanket. “I sleep wherever I can for the night.”

“I have a house…there’s no reason to crash in random, vacant places.”

He lifted an eyebrow. “Little early to go moving in together, isn’t it?”
