Lilith.

She did as she’d done before, when she couldn’t see me but sensed my presence. She came forward, her steps slow but sure. “You’re here, aren’t you? I canfeelyou.”

I didn’t answer, standing above Hunter, my eyes locked on Lilith.

What if I could end her right now? What if I use my reaper form and kill her? A tingling inside me, a chill, made me want to reach for that power and use it against her. Could it be enough? Could I get revenge for Gran right here? End it all here?

“Try it,” she whispered as if sheknewwhat I wanted to do, egging me on.

A choking sound left Hunter, weaker than before, and I dropped my gaze from Lilith.

Right. She didn’t matter right now. I needed to help Hunter. We could deal with Lilith later, now that I knew where she was.

I leaned down and grabbed Hunter, my fingers moving through the smoke until I touched scales, the truth of his real form.

I met Lilith’s gaze once more before yanking backward, holding tight to Hunter, bringing him with me, following the trail through that abyss again, and slamming back into my body.

Hunter rolled, hacking as if he could cough up his lungs themselves. His fingers dug into ground, the concrete cracking beneath his strength, his tattoos returning to his skin and swirling over him as if panicked.

I collapsed backward, breathing hard, the mist thinning around us until it disappeared as though it had never been there in the first place.

I knew exactly where Lilith was, but getting there was another issue.

Purgatory wasn’t the sort of place I ever wanted to go.
