I’m going to lose.

It was becoming clear. The end of my power, the limit of what I could do, was approaching quickly, and yet Lilith showed no signs of slowing.

The men remained unmoving on the ground, and they’d suffer for my failure, just like everyone else. Lilith would win, and there would be no one to stop her, to keep her from destroying everything, and all because I wasn’t strong enough.

Because despite Gran thinking I could stop this, that I was the only one, everyone had put their faith into the wrong person.

Another blast hit me, and while I kept it from burning, the force was enough to throw me backward. The stone slammed against me, hard, and I struggled to pull in breath. My vision wavered, every part of me beyond tired, as if I’d run miles and could barely stand.

Still, I rolled and forced myself to my knees.

“It never had to go this way,” Lilith said, her victory showing all over her smug face.

Then again, was there a question anymore?

“You’re like me,” she said. “You’re someone who doesn’t fit into the world, but whereas I chose to change the world, you tried to change yourself.Pathetic.”

She lifted both hands, a sure sign that she was ready to end this.

Except, when fire sparked to life in her palms, when I tensed for the hit, everything quieted.

The mist shifting around us, the crackle of the flames, the fire in her eyes, it all slowed until it came to a stop, as if the entire world had paused between seconds.

I collapsed.
