And that’s when I scream.
Everything that happens next feels like it’s going in slow motion.
Finn’s chair scrapes the floor.
He jumps up behind me to see what I can see.
We stare in horror at the man, standing in the forest, pointing a gun at us.
Finn pushes me away from the window, and I fall on my knees.
He sprints outside and begins to yell. I hear the word ‘Fuck’ three sentences in a row.
I run over to the living room, picking up the revolver that’s still lying by the armchair, where Finn slept last night.
And then I hear a gunshot.
Eric’s looking up at me with big, terrified eyes, and I tell him to stay put, and run out onto the veranda. I point the gun, cock it like I saw Finn do last night, and take aim.
‘Don’t you dare fucking move!’ I cry out. It’s the least convincing way it’s ever been said, but I hope my words have some effect.
Now, finally, I have time to process what I’m seeing out there. Finn is standing next to the man, holding his arm in the air. The gunshot must have been fired into the sky. The guy is standing, tight-lipped and fuming.
‘You pair of idiots!’ he shouts. ‘I had it in my sights! I was about to put a bullet through that bear’s head!’
Oh, jeez-us. He wasn’t pointing the rifle at the cabin window. He must have been pointing it just beyond the cabin. It’s still messed up, though. You just don’t go pointing guns near people’s homes.
‘I’m sick of telling you, you asshole,’ growls Finn. ‘You don’t kill the bears around here. Or anything else for that matter. Not yesterday. Not today. Not ever. And that means no more illegal traps, either.Capiche?’
‘Fuck you,’ the guy spits. ‘This isn’t even your land.’
When I hear this, I step forward, and I keep the revolver pointed right at the guy. My hand is trembling, but I’m sure they can’t see that from here. I know how dangerous it is to point a gun at a person, so I make sure my finger onlylookslike it’s resting on the trigger. Time to act my Little ass off.
‘Hey, Mister,’ I call out. ‘This is ourhomeyou’ve just wandered into. And you’ll never be a guest here. You think that little prank with the bobcat scared us? Leaving its head on our lovely polished floor? If anything, it’s just putfire in our belly. Makes us know that whatever we decide to do to you, it's Even Stevens.' I’m still shaking, but I keep talking. 'Now, you listen to me. You so much as lay a finger on a pine marten in this forest, and you've got both of us to deal with now. It's Double Trouble.'
The guy looks at me, open-mouthed and terrified. He’s probably never had a gun pointed at him all his life. He’s always been the one to point the gun.
‘Fuck this,’ he mumbles, and then he says something to Finn that I can’t hear and he turns around and wanders off.
Finn stays where he is, watching the guy leave, and then he turns to look at me. Several emotions seem to flicker in his eyes all at once. Surprise. Respect. Desire.
I lower the gun.
Finn walks over to me, and takes the gun out of my hand.
‘Damn, Dee,’ he says. ‘That was hot as hell.’
He uncocks the gun and tucks it into the back of his shorts.
‘I’m not the fragile girl you all seem to think I am,’ I say, looking up at him. ‘I’m all grown up, Finn.’
‘Yes, you fucking are,’ Finn growls, and he grabs my ass and pulls me toward him. ‘You’re complicated, and you act Little, but I know you’re a woman,’ he growls. I can feel something hard pressing up against me, and it’s not the revolver.
I feel his lips press down hard against mine, but this time, I don’t wait for him to show me what to do. I seek his tongue out with my own, and I start devouring him.
Pointing that revolver, showing that guy who’s boss, it’s made me drunk on power, and I use every bit of that power on Finn now. I grip his shoulders, digging my nails into his t-shirt, dragging them across his skin. I press my chest against him and grind my hips into him. I kiss him with a fiery passion I never thought was possible.
Suddenly, Finn pulls away from me. ‘Come with me,’ he demands, then kisses me again.
