Chapter 13 - Zeke

They detangled themselves from each other slowly. Neither was giving the appearance of wanting to leave the comfort of whoever’s bed they’d invaded, but they didn’t have much of a choice. Reality split the moment apart too quickly for his liking, so that, even as he unwound his arms from around her, he let his hands linger on the spots they’d already explored. The curve of her hip, her stomach, her thigh. He wanted to make her aware that if circumstances had been different, they would have stayed here. They would have stayed here for days.

He was still high off having her close, still savoring how she hadn’t hesitated in opening up, letting him in.

Ledger.

He slipped to the edge of the bed. She soon joined him, only a little self-conscious in her nakedness. She didn’t cover herself, but he could tell she was contemplating her dress, rumpled on the floor, and how quickly she could step into it.

So, he got to his feet and picked it up for her.

When her eyes met his, the look in them made him almost toss the dress aside and get her into his arms again.

“We have to go,” he reprimanded, the look softening away from want and into an agreement.

She got ahold of herself, rising to her feet. He took a knee, opening the dress for her to step into it. Once he’d pulled it to her hips, standing before her again, her hands grabbed the dress where he was holding it. Their eyes met again. This time there was no denying neither of them cared much about the mission anymore and she let the dress go. It fell to the floor as they wrapped their arms around each other at the same time. Her mouth was waiting, lips parting the second his touched them, their tongues meeting. They inhaled each other but broke apart the next second at a loud knock at the door.

The guard was getting impatient.

“Sorry to interrupt, but your audience has been requested.”

Nikolai.

“I’m going to kill him,” Zeke hissed, not because of the intrusion, but because of the smugness in Nikolai’s voice.

They were cornered.

“It’s fine,” Anna said. “He’ll have told them what we told him. Perhaps one of the sons wants to meet with us.”

Zeke was far from convinced. This smelled of a trap. Should they make a run for it? He watched Anna as she slipped her arms into the straps of the dress, trying and failing to rearrange her hair into something that at least resembled her previous elaborate hairdo. No, they couldn’t run. They wouldn’t make it to the gates before they were shot in the back. They’d have to go see whatever it was whoever wanted to see them had on their mind.

Anna looked frail in her human form, but if she shifted, she’d be as mighty as any other dragon. He reminded himself of that, keeping the anxiety for her welfare at bay, as he pulled his pants back on, his shirt, not giving a crap about his hair.

He wanted Nikolai to know that Anna was his. That he was hers. That there was no way Nikolai could ever get between them, nothing he could do to sever their bond. They were mated. Body, heart, and soul.

That thought made him square his shoulders with the truth of it.

He should tell her.

He turned his head to her, held out one hand. She took it, a smile on her mouth that gave him an idea of what exactly she was smiling about. Before he had given it any real thought, he pulled her close and kissed her temple gently. It felt right. Everything felt just as it was always meant to be.

He wasn’t just falling, he had fallen.

She gave him a wide-eyed but happy look when his lips left her temple.

“You’re amazing,” he said, voice lowered. She huffed a laugh, but her hold on his hand tightened. “Youare,” he underlined. “You okay?”

“Better than okay,” she assured him. “Much, much better.”

He chuckled.

Nikolai was forgotten until his fist beat the door again.

“Hurry up, please,” came his voice.

Anna raised her eyebrows, making Zeke suppress a laugh. She smiled, but it died on her mouth, sobering him up as well. They couldn’t ignore the fact that whatever they were about to face might be gravely serious. Time to lie through their teeth.

They had their cover story firmly in place. Surely it would serve them in whatever situation that was about to be thrown at them. Zeke chose to believe in that as he grabbed Anna’s hand and they headed up to the door.
