She’d regretted it the very first night, alone in a big bed, missing him. Missing his laughter, the way he sighed right before he fell asleep, the way he pulled her into his chest every morning when he woke up, giving her a peck on the temple. She’d missed the pecks on her temple the most. Like the reason she even had temples had suddenly been negated.

She walked into the center of the three rings, making eye contact with her brother and his mate Anna on the way in. Anna Aslanova was smiling blithely, Alina certain that she was remembering her own bonding ceremony and all the jitters she must have felt.

Alina didn’t feel nervous. In fact, she felt calm as her eyes met Dmitri’s.

He looked handsome as ever in a purple suit, a white rose on the lapel, a soft look in his eyes. She was melting under that gaze, reaching her hands out to him and he took them in his. She was so very much in love with him that she couldn’t stop the tears from springing to her eyes, blinking at them. But she was smiling. As was he.

“Hi,” he whispered.

“Hi,” she whispered back.

“So, the whole idea of spending a week apart?”

“Yeah, let’s never do that again.”

He chuckled in agreement, looking like he wanted to kiss her, but that wasn’t quite how the ceremony went and so they both held back. She was content at having him in front of her, unable to take his eyes off her. This was what made everything worth it, wasn’t it? This person who made her feel as though she could do anything, conquer everything. For a brief second, she was grateful she’d met Gregor, because she doubted that she’d never have sought out Dmitri Kuznetsov on her own.

Oh, fuck, she owed Gregor her happiness?

That was a very scary thought, but on the other hand, it helped her make peace with everything he’d put her through. The lies, the deception, the kidnapping, the near death he’d caused her. Instead of anger, she suddenly felt immense gratitude, and with that the shadow figure haunting her memories began to fade.

Dmitri noticed something was on her mind, furrowing his brow lightly in query, but she shook her head that she was fine.

And she was.

Better than fine.

She was fantastic.

Chapter 14 - Dmitri

He knocked on the front door of the flat, waiting patiently for her to answer. He’d dressed up for the occasion in one of the gardener’s uniforms, carrying a pail with cleaning materials. He’d thought of putting on a baseball cap but didn’t like the way they made the shape of his head look weird. He could only hope she hadn’t dreamed of a handyman in a backwards baseball cap.

The door of the flat opened, Alina looking at him softly, quizzically.

“Yes?” she asked.

He was already getting hard from what she was wearing, which was a very revealing silk nightgown under a silk robe that was barely closed for decency.

“You called for the handyman?” he nearly stammered, fingers itching for her skin, for the heat between her legs to welcome them, for her mouth to suck and tease them.

Fuck.

This woman.

“Oh, I did!” she exclaimed, giggling moronically, making him have to stifle a laugh, forcing himself to stay in character.

He knew the reward would be great if he did. She loved it when he restrained himself until he couldn’t bear it any longer. The thought made his cock twitch. Throwing her on the bed, tugging those silky things off her…

Focusing on getting out of the hallway he stepped by her into her old flat. He’d been there once before and understood why she insisted they keep it. It was a bit of an oasis in the middle of Old Town. She kept returning to tend to her plants and enjoy the vestiges of her old life. Not that she was clinging to them, more that she was honoring them. He liked it. He liked the worn sofa and the stocked bookshelves, but more than anything he liked her bed. And the playful mood she got into when they came into the city.

“I think there’s something wrong with my sink,” she said. “I don’t know, would you have a look?”

He couldn’t fight the smile at her clueless attitude, her face a mask of sincere innocence. He wanted to smash his mouth against hers and take her against that sink. But instead, he started checking the faucet, bending over to show off his ass. He knew she thought it was once of his best features. He glanced back at her, noting she was already biting her lower lip. It meant the outlook was good for him very soon having her panting under him.

“Everything looks all right,” he said, her hands sliding up his thighs to his crotch and he realized she’d kneeled behind him.

Oh, she really was in the mood. He wondered what she’d been doing before he got there. Had she been touching herself, waiting for him, fantasizing about the fantasy they were about to play out?
