"Now, you're going to lie there and take it, just like you did tonight with that pretty prince," he hissed.

Fen was still trying to catch her breath when a blade appeared at the guard's throat.

"Don't move, or I will split you wide open," a cold female voice hissed. Fen's vision cleared, and she saw Kemes's dark face over the man's shoulder. Kashmet had a sword to the other guard's throat as well.

"Do you know what we do to rapists in Atrahasis?" Kemes purred. Another blade was pressed to the man's groin. "We flay their cocks, piece by bloody piece."

"I've seen her do it too," Kashmet added, his teeth flashing in a menacing smile. "She peeled one like a piece of fruit. Never thought a man could scream so high or for so long."

"W-What do you want? You know you're n-not allowed down here," the guard babbled.

"We've come to see Nektos and to make sure the prince's favorite champion isn't touched by the likes of you. She is favored by him, which means your filthy hands and little cock don't touch her," Kashmet growled.

Kemes's blade angled tighter against the man's throat. "You two seem like bright boys, so you will go and tell your master we need an audience. Then, you are going to spread the word that if anyone touches Fenrys Rune-Tongue, I will take them apart slowly, starting with their dicks."

"I-I understand. Let me up."

The guard whimpered when Kemes chuckled in his ear. "What a pity. I was hoping to try out my new knife tonight."

"You never know what might happen. The night is still young, dear sister."

Kashmet and Kemes watched carefully as the guards scrambled to their feet and away from Fen. The shaken guard locked the door to her cell, and he and his companion all but ran to tell Nektos that the twins wanted to see him.

"Thank you both." Fen sat up slowly. "What are you doing here?"

"Khan didn't want anything to happen to you. He gets protective over people that he likes," Kashmet admitted.

Fen was unexpectedly touched. "I don't know what to say."

"You don't need to say anything," Kemes replied and sheathed her knife. "Just keep making him smile like he did tonight."

Before Fen could ask what they meant by that, the guards appeared and told them that Nektos was waiting for them.

"Sleep with one eye open tonight, Fen. I don't trust any of these fuckers," Kashmet grumbled, and the pair disappeared after the guard.

Fen curled up in a tight ball. "I always do."

Nine

Fen was awoken by Mohar unlocking her cell door. She had been so sore and exhausted from the arena fight and then the beating from the guard that she had passed out curled up in the hay.

"Come on, wolf, you need to eat," Mohar said. He was observing her like a dog that might bite him. "I was sorry to hear what happened to you last night. I'm glad the dread twins turned up in time to stop it."

"The dread twins? That's what you call them?" Fen washed the remaining makeup and sleep from her face.

"That's what everyone calls them. Rumors say they were Sargon's assassins before they came to protect the prince. They are ruthless killers," Mohar replied.

Fen tried to reconcile that reputation with the two joking bodyguards the night before. "Who is Sargon?"

"He's the head of the council that runs Atrahasis in the north. He's the prince's grandfather and apparently a scary son of a bitch. He raised the prince, and that's why he's also the last person in Ankhara I ever want to meet," he replied. He glanced over his shoulder. "I heard you fucked him last night."

"I did. He was good too," Fen said, with a waggle of her brows. "He helped unwind some of my cramped muscles from fighting in the arena."

What were a few more rumors if they already thought Khan was a scary bastard? She hadn't seen that side of him at all. She had probably been too distracted by the magic and the food to give it much notice. Fen could feel malice; she could see it inside people if she looked hard enough, and she'd felt nothing from him.

Fen collected a bowl of fruit and some kind of mushy grain porridge. The fruit was because she did well in the arena the day before. She put a few pieces in her porridge and then pushed it down the table for the others to share. She didn't want anyone to start shit with her out of resentment. She was still sore from fighting and having a chimera die on top of her.

Whistles started at the other end of the table. Fen turned to see what the fuss was about and spotted Azra speaking with Mohar. He walked back over to where Fen was sitting.
