Page 13 of Forever Mates

My hand slips to the gold charm hanging off my throat. The enchanted canine that Ryker gave me to replace the loaded one that I’d worn for close to a year… this is my fang.

That one belongs to Aleks.

Looking past the fang and the book, my gaze lands on the empty pad again. Besides it being crooked, I notice that the top sheet is torn in half, the bottom part missing. Hmm. That’s not like Aleks at all. He’s usually too fastidious. The way his glasses are folded primly, the book centered just so… the pad and the pencil are more out of place than the fang is.

I wonder…

I pick up the pad. Maybe Aleks had to write something down so he grabbed a pad and a pencil, scribbled something, then tore the sheet before dropping the pad and pencil on the coffee table. That is an Aleks-type of reaction. He never would reach for his phone to make a note. He’s more than two hundred years old. He’ll always grab a pencil first.

Squinting, I look at the page underneath in the vague hope that I can make out an impression.

I scoff. What am I thinking? I’m not even close to figuring it out, and this Nancy Drew shit is for the birds.

Throwing the notepad back onto the coffee table, I pull out my phone.

I want an answer to where he is? Let me ask the damn question.

Oof. With a start, I notice that the last time I texted Aleks is well before my mating. I can’t help but cringe at that. It makes it so much worse that I really thought I could just show up here unannounced more than two weeks later and he’d be waiting for when I finally decided to stop by for a chat.

Why would he be? Not only did he stand by his promise to pack up everything I own and relocate it across Muncie, but he made it very clear where we stood when I called him out for reneging on his promise that we could stay friends.

He told me he lied. And, still, I decided to come see him instead of asking Ryker to get in touch with Roman.

Welp. I’m not going to make that mistake again.

Without even typing a message, I slip my phone back into my pocket. When I glance up at Jace, I discover he’s watching me with a curious expression.

My wolf doesn’t like that. Neither do I.

But it’s Jace. So, biting back the urge to snarl at him, I make myself shrug. “I’m done here. Come on. Let’s go.”
