“Sorry,” he chokes out. “Sorry, Alpha.”

Kicking him while he’s down would just be wrong, wouldn’t it? Besides, I’m part of the Alpha couple now. Taking care of my packmate is my responsibility even if he keeps on insisting on calling me ‘Alpha’.

“Stay down,” I murmur. “I’ve got this.”

Jace gurgles on his blood, but I already see that the wound is slowly beginning to heal. He’ll be fine by the time we make it out of Muncie—so long as I can make sure we can get to the Jeep without any further injuries.

The vampire laughs. Despite his harsh voice, it’s such a musical laugh, it sends shivers down my spine. “One wolf dead. One to go.”

He thinks he killed Jace. If I didn’t already guess this was his first attempt to challenge one of my kind, that proves it. With the rate that we heal, it takes a little more than a single bite to take us out.

But if he doesn’t know that, I’m certainly not going to be the one to tell him.

Instead, shaking my head in disbelief, I look at the vampire as if he’s an idiot. Seeing Jace’s blood dribble down his chin only affirms what I’m about to do.

“I told you not to try me.”

I’m goading him. Of course I am. As his Alpha’s mate, I have the right to avenge my packmate; at least, that’s how I’m going to see this to Roman. But I want to be in the right. If I’m going to kill this bastard, I have to give him the chance to go after me first.

And he does.

My last thought is just how pissed Ryker’s gonna be when he hears about this before the vamp leaps at me.
