Tell that to the grey wolf that came at us.

So consumed with watching the fight, I don’t notice that another male has joined us right away. That’s my fault, and I want to kick myself that he was able to get as close as he did before Duke’s warning growl pulls my attention away from the battling wolves to the shifter standing in his skin.

First thing I notice is that he reminds me of a funeral director. His brown hair is cut short, his face long and unnaturally thin. Gaunt, I guess. He has a solemn expression, and his shifter’s eyes are so dark, they appear black. He’s even wearing a freakin suit! Black jacket, black slacks, black ties over a white shirt, he’s unlike any shifter I’ve ever seen before.

He’s a beta, too, which definitely doesn’t bode well. Is he Walker’s Beta? Is my luck really that shitty that the Wicked Wolf’s right-hand wolf just so happens to show up when my packmate is fighting his?

Or is this some kind of set-up?

His voice is deep, yet almost unfeeling as he says in a bored voice, “Stop them.”

Two brawling wolves are almost impossible to separate. In fact, I’m not even sure it can be done without some kind of magic.

Like, oh, the power of the Luna.

Does he know what I am? I’m beginning to think he does, otherwise he’d never think I could stop them. Am I going to come out and tell him that I’m a female alpha, though?

Not a chance.

“Get in between two snarling wolves? I know you’re kidding.”

“Call off your mutt or I’ll tell mine to finish this.”

“I can’t,” I try to lie.

He’s not having it.

His face as hard as ever, he says gruffly, “Oh, but you will.”

Shit.

Giving him a well-practiced frightened look—a hallmark of an easily spooked, gentle omega—I move past the beta and let out a soft cry.

“Please, stop this!”

Yeah. That doesn’t make an impact. Like, at all.

Omega Gem isn’t enough to stop a vicious Western Pack wolf. Oh, no. This is gonna take Alpha Gem—and I’m beginning to realize that: Yes. This had definitely been a set-up.

What else can I do? I can’t watch the scrappy Jace try to defend me again without doing something to help him. My hesitation in Muncie led to a disaster, and one that Ryker had to add to his plate by having a long conversation with Roman to keep me from being banished from the Fang City.

I won’t let something like that happen again.

So, tapping into the power of my wolf, I snap, “Stop. Now.”

The grey wolf heels immediately. So does Jace.

And I realize that if the beta wolf has any doubts as to who I am—to what I am—then I just settled them for him then and there.

With a jerk of his chin at the wolf, he gives him a wordless command.

At once, the grey wolf gets up, sprinting for the trees before disappearing into the forest.

As he does, another shifter steps into the clearing. It’s a third male, since I saw the tail of the attacking wolf brush against the newcomer as they switched spots, and when I focus on him, I find myself frowning.

He’s a good-looking male, with a lean build, styled black hair, light gold eyes, and a freaking cleft in his strong jaw. Something about him says he should be as intimidating as the other wolf, only he’s smiling, in a much better mood, so his dangerous air seems tempered. But none of that is what makes me frown.

I suddenly understand his dangerous vibes. Based on his aura, he’s an alpha wolf. Not the Alpha, of course, but the same rank as me.
