Page 62 of Forever Mates

Forget it.“By the way, how’s Aleks?”

We’re beyond pretending that I’m a stranger to the vamp he captured. I guessed that he knew all along, and even if he hadn’t made that clear with the “roommate” jab, I’d put a hundred down that either Christian or Theo filled him in on the talk I had with Aleks.

“The leech? He’s fine. Getting ready for the next bout of training, if you really want to know. But enough about him. Let’s talk about you.”

“Me?”

“You’ve been here for almost a week. I was just seeing if you wanted to revisit my offer.”

Riiiight. His brilliant idea that, if he could get me to set foot on his territory, I’d never want to leave.

As if I would leave my mate behind.

As if I’d ever betray my real mom and dad like that.

Please.

“To stay here? Uh. No. Sorry.”

I’m so not sorry—and he knows it, too.

“Oh?” Walker prowls around me. There’s no other word for the way that he moves around me, circling me. I know better than to allow a monster like Walker at my back and I turn slowly, tracking him. “What if I sweetened the pot?”

Hmm. What’s a nice way of saying that there isn’t a single thing he can give me that would make me want to spend one minute longer around him than I have to?

The friendly, affable father figure facade he tries to sell is just that: a facade. This prowling alpha wolf, eyeing me as if searching for a weakness, for some spot to attack… this is the true Wicked Wolf.

I have to remember that.

Even my wolf is warning me not to piss off the unpredictable Alpha. Just because he’s trying to be nice at the moment, I can’t—I won’t—let myself be fooled. The darkness that clings to him like a shadow is too thick, the gleam in his eyes too much of a warning.

Stay on guard, Gem. Don’t let it down.

“Like what?”

There. Nice and safe and to the point.

He grins. And I know that he’s pure wolf, that there’s no vamp in him, but those fangs… whoa.

“Whatever you want.”

Too bad there isn’t a single thing I want from him.

“You’re special,” he goes on to say. “So special that I spent twenty-five years looking for you. I never believed that my blood would be erased so easily. You were a fierce and protective pup. I should’ve known you were something when you challenged me as a tiny whelp, and now look at you. A female alpha. Do you know what you could do with that power?”

Do I? Considering a lot of the rumors about a female alpha have proved true when it comes to me, I’ve got a pretty good idea. Am I going to admit that to Walker?

Not a chance in hell.
