“Mm.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Ryker opens his mouth, but I never find out what his noncommittal noise means. Before he can say another word, a sudden shout has everyone’s attention—including mine.

“Attention, everyone!”

We all turn to look toward the head table. Walker is sitting in his seat, a secretive smile on his face, while Theo has moved to stand in front of it.

He’s the one who yelled out. He’s not an Alpha, but he’s still an alpha wolf, and his command is enough to draw the attention of most wolves even in spite of how loud he yelled.

Once he’s sure all of his packmates are looking at him, Theo clears his throat. Then, to my shock, he raises his voice even louder to call out four words that have my wolf suddenly up and pacing inside of me.

“I challenge the Alpha!”

In his determined shout, I can all but hear the capital ‘A’ in Alpha. But it’s not Walker. Theo would never challenge the Alpha of his pack.

Still, he said Alpha. So, if not Walker, then—

No. He can’t possibly mean—

I swivel, searching for my mate.

That same, fucking awful neutral expression is on his face.

He knows he’s been challenged, too.

Shoving back his chair, Ryker meets Theo’s stare head-on. “I accept.”

Damn it!
