RUN OR YOU’RE DEAD

Ijump at the sound of her voice inside my head right as Aleks finishes clasping his fang around my neck.

“I’m sorry. Did I pinch you?”

I whirl on him, excitement leading me to grab him by the sleeve. “I heard her. The Luna. Iheardher.”

“You did? What did she say?”

What I’ve known all along. “That I’m yours.”

Aleks grins. “She isn’t wrong.”

I’m not, says the Luna. And I’m glad to see that you’re finally accepting that yourself, Elizabeth.

“Is she saying something else?” Aleks asks. “Your eyes… they’re shining so brightly, it’s like they’re a mirror. You look beautiful, Elizabeth. You look happy.”

I am. I can’t believe it. I thought… I thought that I’d never hear from her again. I’m so stinking pleased to have her voice in my head again that I don’t even doubt the way my eyes must be flickering and shining. When my negative emotions get to be too much, they darken to black. During mating, Aleks sometimes mentions that my eyes seem more silvery and bright than usual. Is that why?

Makes sense. If there’s anyone in the world who makes me happy, it’s my vampire.

“She said that she’s glad I finally accepted myself. And I did,” I confess, “when I finally accepted that you love me for who I am.”

“Oh, ksiezyca. I don’t just love you. Iadoreyou.”

And that is why I chose you for him, my daughter.

I’m still clutching Aleks’s sleeve. With his other hand, he takes mine, giving my fingers a quick squeeze. “Your eyes just flickered again. Take your time, my beloved. Talk with your Luna.”

I want to. I have so many questions I want to ask her, especially since I’m not sure if this is a one time thing or if she’ll be my conscience and my guide once more, but I hate the idea of letting Aleks out of my sight. Not because I’m afraid he’s going to leave me, too, but because… I don’t know. I have this weird feeling in the pit of my stomach all of a sudden.

Call it intuition, but I think Aleks should stay with me inside the feral’s den.

“I don’t know…”

He bows his head, meeting my gaze pointedly as he looks down his patrician nose at me. His pale eyes don’t have a lick of red in them, but I’ve seen determination before—and Aleks is determined. “I’m going to take a patrol around the woods. Make sure they’re as abandoned as they seem. I’ll be right back.”

I let out a small laugh. That male and his patrols. Lifting our intertwined hands up to my mouth, I press a kiss against his chilled skin. “Don’t be gone long.”

“I won’t,” he vows.

He closes the door behind him again when he leaves. I take a moment to just revel in the way his scent has already filled the small room before I sink down on the non-bloodstained seat and close my eyes, reaching for the Luna again.

Since I was a young pup and I realized that, like others in my line, I was Luna-touched and could speak with her if I concentrated enough, I found that sitting somewhere peacefully with my eyes shut made it easier to understand her. The Luna is a goddess, the most powerful shifter who ever lived, and over centuries, she’s become the moon personified.

Her voice has always been so soft and gentle. She was a female alpha when she was alive, but there’s something so maternal about her, I’ve never once been afraid to contact her.

Like now.

Why did you go, I ask. I probably sound more accusing than I should, but she’s never left me before. Even during those awkward teen years where I tried out as many males in my birth pack as would have me, she never judged, only made sure I knew that I wouldn’t find my fated mate among them. Because, well, yeah. Mine turned out to be a vampire.

Looking back, I probably should’ve figured that one out a long time ago…

I shake my head. Focus, Elizabeth. The Luna is listening.I needed you and you were gone.

You had to figure it out on your own, my daughter. I could help you. Guide you. But, in the end, your life is yours. The bonds you make are yours.

But Aleks is mine, right? And I’m supposed to be his…
