He had already come to terms with everything that happened between us. He was making that perfectly clear. He didn’t even need to hear my part of the story.

“I wanted to apologize. To explain.” My voice sounded distant in my ears. Like I wasn’t the one talking.

“Apology accepted. No need to explain yourself though. I know the whole story. Hannah told me. I know why you kissed Dylan at that party. I even understand why you left for London. The lying part was something I couldn’t stomach for a while, but everything is forgiven and forgotten now.”

“Is it though? Because you sound like you’re angry with me.”

His brows shot up.

“I guess I didn’t think I would see you so soon, and I definitely didn’t think that I was going to be the one to explain myself.”

My hands started shaking. He saw it and like always came to my rescue.

“Do you have plans?” he asked with a softer tone.

“Umm…,” I rubbed my forehead. “I obviously have to graduate. I’ll talk to principal Smith on Monday. He will probably want me to repeat the whole year.”

“Probably. The dick that he is. You should ask your mother to talk to him.”

“I might,” I hesitated. “And what are your plans? If I’m allowed to ask one more question.”

“My mother didn’t tell you?” he asked surprised.

“We didn’t talk about you,” I heard how bad that sounded, but it was already too late. His jaw clenched, and his eyes narrowed.

“So you never even asked about me? About how I was doing?”

I nodded, my heart was heavy with guilt.

“And did you ask about Troy?”

“Lucas, please…”

“It’s a simple question, Clem.”

“Yes, I did. I asked about Troy. I asked about your father. And I specifically asked your mother not to talk to me about you.”

He shot up from the bed with a murderous look on his face.

“You used to tell me that I was the unbelievable one, but you’re just off the charts,” he shook his head. He opened the door and stood there waiting for me to leave. I stepped out in the hallway, and he continued. “Mom and Troy love you,” his tone was emotionless. “You can come here anytime you want. I won’t get in your way.”

“Lucas,” I pleaded.

“What?” he ran a hand through his hair. “What more could you want from me?”

I bit my lower lip. He didn’t reach to release it with his thumb like he usually did. I had to say the right thing this time.

“Nothing. You gave me more than I deserved.”

That was the last time we spoke before he left for Seattle.

???

Principal Smith agreed to give me the opportunity to graduate without attending classes. But I had to take tests and exams throughout the year. So I was definitely stuck in California. With my mom.

It was ironic. How much time I had spent preparing to leave. Then, when I actually left and pissed everyone in my life off, I only managed to stay away for a few months before I ran back to my mother.

“Do you want to watch a movie tonight?” Sylvia cut off my thoughts. I was drinking a cup of coffee by the kitchen counter. I was preparing to go to work.
