“Not at the moment. Do you want me to get mad?” she asked and sounded confused.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know,” I shot up on my feet and started walking back and forth. “I need…”

“To vent? To yell at someone?”

“Yes. But I don’t have a person to yell at, because I’m the one doing everything wrong.”

My mother narrowed her eyes at me.

“You want me to get mad at you, so we could scream at each other?”

“I guess,” I stopped pacing. “No”, I let out a breath. “I don’t want to scream at you. Can we leave the movie for another time? I’m not feeling up to it. Besides, I’m covering the first shift again tomorrow and have to get up early.”

“Another time,” Sylvia nodded.

I went to my room and I grabbed my phone.

Clem: Dad, can mom and I come to Seattle for Thanksgiving?

I received a reply almost immediately.

Dad: Of course, honey.

I saw the texts from Hannah from earlier, and I finally opened them.

Hannah: I asked if he’s bringing someone home for Thanksgiving.

Hannah: He knew it was you asking.

Hannah: It’s not my fault he knows you so well.

Hannah: I’ll forward you his text

Hannah: Lucas: Mind your own business, Spencer, and tell your friend to ask ME next time she has a question about my personal life.

I threw my phone on the bed and then nervously picked it up immediately.

Clem: Forget it. I’m sorry I asked you to do that.

Clem: We’re going to Seattle for Thanksgiving, so we’re not going to see each other.

Hannah: Are you talking about us two or you two?

Clem: Both.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Lucas

I thought Clementine Hartley had already done everything she could have to push me away and stomp all over my feelings for her, but she surprised me.

I got home for Thanksgiving with a blossoming hope for the two of us. She had after all told the truth about her inquiring if I had a girlfriend. I thought she was finally starting to open up. And then I got back home just to find out she chickened out once again and left for Seattle.

Another month passed, and she was still not talking to me. No surprises there.
