“I know,” his tones suggested it was obvious. “Why are you wearing it?”

“What kind of question is that?” I was getting annoyed.

“A simple one.”

“He sent it to me,” I said not even sure why I felt obligated to give him an answer.

“So? If I give you a t-shirt with my number, would you wear it?” he pressed. I didn’t understand where this was going.

“I would burn it,” I said with a smile on my face.

His head tilted back with a quiet laughter. I hated how he laughed at me. It made me sober up.

“What?” I snapped at him. He looked at me like he was seeing everything inside me. The thoughts, the feelings, my confusion.

“Go to bed, Clementine,” he turned away and placed the bottle of water to his cheek again.

“Don’t call me that,” I roared.

“That’s your name, isn’t it?”

“You know I hate it.”

“You hate a lot of things. I can’t keep track of them all. And I don’t have to. Point your expectations at Dylan. I hear you too are really hitting it off this time around.”

“Asshole,” I said and stormed towards the narrow hallway leading to the living room, but Lucas cut me off. He looked angry all of a sudden.

“I told you what you have to do if you want me to be nice.”

“You’re crazy if you think I want to sleep with you,” I tried to look repulsed of the idea. He placed his hands on my neck and used his thumbs to lift my chin up, trying to make me look at him. I did without saying a word, my pulse hammering in my veins. I wondered if he felt it on my neck.

“I see you. Maybe it won’t be tonight, but I can see it in your eyes. Your mask is cracking. You won’t be able to hide. Save us a couple of days.”

I pursed my lips infuriated and pushed his hands off my face.

“I will never sleep with you,” I growled. “Never.”

“I doubt it, but even if you manage to control yourself, I know it won’t be because you don’t want me.” He leaned forward. His lips an inch away from mine as he whispered. “It will be because you’re a coward.”

Then he stepped away, and I left him alone in the kitchen.

Lucas spent that weekend without producing one smile. Fun day was canceled. No one was in the mood.

His phone was constantly buzzing, but he ignored it every time. He just flipped it with the screen down or put a pillow over it. I was curious, but couldn’t ask. So when he left his phone on the couch, I fought the urge to pick it up and check who was calling so much. Luckily for me, the phone started ringing. All I had to do was lean in and flip it only for a second. So I did.

“Isn’t that a thing for girlfriends only?” Lucas firm voice filled my ears. I put on an innocent look and turned to face him.

“The curiosity? No, I think all girls are equal when it comes to learning things.”

“How about invading a guy’s personal space and going through his phone?” his eyes lacked the usual spark that blinded me every time we argued. What was wrong with him? I ignored his question simply because he was right, and I had no excuse.

“Is Chase the one calling all the time? Why are you not answering him?”

“Seriously?” he looked frustrated. “You’re not even going to apologize?”

“I didn’t go through your phone,” I rolled my eyes. “I just flipped it. It was innocent.”
