Chase was right. I was a goner.

Clem closed her eyes and blew the candles. Everyone clapped. Except me.

I was having an epiphany. The days I spent wanting revenge were gone. The thought of her suffering because of me didn’t please me anymore. It teared up my insides.

I wanted to know what she wished for, but I couldn’t ask. Luckily for me, my little brother was the other sucker in love with her in that room and did me a solid without even knowing.

“What did you wish for?” he asked.

I was watching her like a hawk, so there was just no chance at all of me missing the split second her eyes drifted to mine.

“Troy, honey,” mom pulled him back to give Clementine some space. “You know she can’t tell you or it won’t come true.”

My phone buzzed. It was a text message.

Amy: My parents are out of town.

Lucas: A party?

Amy answered in a second.

Amy: No. Just the two of us. Chase is out.

I looked around thinking how easy it could be with Amy. No drama, no secrets.

Hannah was eyeing Tyler like he was the only thing in the world, and he was nothing but a train wreck. Their whole damn family was. Clementine included.

I felt sorry for Spencer. Her heart would be broken in no time if she continued this illusion. Just like Clementine broke mine.

Lucas: No, thanks.

Amy: Are you sure? No strings attached.

Lucas: Positive.

Even though I declined Amy’s company, I still needed to get away.

“Well, we cut the cake, so I’m going out now.”

“It’s school night, you know the rules,” my father warned me.

“Yeah. I’ll be back before midnight.”

I broke the rule. I came back at two in the morning.

The lights in our guest room were still on. I stopped by the door. Some pathetic part of my brain thought she was waiting up for me.

My father appeared next to me in the hallway. He looked pissed.

“Where were you?”

“At the beach.”

“And why didn’t you pick up your phone?”

“I left it in the car.”

That was another rule I broke. I had to always be reachable whenever I was out at night.
