“Buddy,” Lucas intervened with a serious face. “I think Dylan wanted her to eat one very special banana.”

Elizabeth gasped. My mouth fell open.

“Lucas,” Garret warned.

“What? It’s my duty to explain to my little brother about the birds and the bees, right?”

“What are you talking about?” Troy looked between his father and brother. “I don’t get it”. He knew they were talking about something he shouldn’t be hearing, and he wanted to be in on Lucas’s joke.

“People make jokes about bananas,” Lucas started. “…because they look like…”

“Out! Now!” Elizabeth pointed at the door. Lucas grinned.

“Sorry, bro, mom wants you to stay ignorant,” He got up and took a banana from the fruit basket Elizabeth always left fully stocked on the kitchen counter.

“All this banana talk made me hungry. Are you hungry, Clem? I could share my banana with you,” he pointed at me with the banana, his eyes daring me to answer to his sexual innuendo.

“Out!” Elizabeth threw a table cloth at him, and he lifted his hands in surrender.

“Troy, don’t listen to mom, OK? You can share your banana with any girl you want to.”

“Lucas, I swear to God…,” He smacked a kiss to his mother’s temple and got out of the kitchen, humming something.

I lingered downstairs for about half an hour. I thought about the conversation Lucas and I had before he started acting like a twelve-year-old. It felt meaningful in some way. Like it changed something between us.

I went up to my room, and I threw myself on the bed. Something was pressing to my back from under the covers. I pulled them down. A banana and a note.

“If it’s not enough for you, I have another one at your disposal.”

The asshole went into my room. How dared he? I took the banana and waltzed over to his room. I burst inside without a knock. He was in his bed reading a book. I tossed the banana at him. He tilted his head and dodged it, not tearing his eyes from the pages.

“You read weird shit, nemesis.”

I looked at him confused. He closed the book and showed me the cover.

“Stay.Out.Of.My.Room,” I spat, infuriated. “Don’t touch my things. Don’t get near my bed again, you got it?”

“I’m sorry, your room? Last time I checked, this was still my house. So your room is actually my room. And as I come to think about it, you’re sleeping in my bed. I could decide to pay you a visit some night.”

The image of Lucas sneaking in my bed made my skin hot.

He was still casually lying and not at all surprised I was here. No doubt he expected me to do exactly that. Show up kicking and screaming.

He held up the book for me to take it back. I reached out for it, the book fell on the floor with a thud, and he grabbed my wrist. In a second I was on top of him on his bed. I straddled him without even thinking about it.

“It’s a nice change,” his voice was low. “You pressing me against a surface and not the other way around. No need to throw things at me though. Next time you want some attention, just ask politely, like a lady.”

I should have bit his head off for this comment, but I wanted other things at that moment. I leaned forward, and our breaths mixed.

“Why can’t we stay away from each other anymore?” I asked.

“Hormones,” he answered. But I could see it’s not even close to what he really thought. “Did you kiss him today?” he asked and I shook my head. “Why?”

“It’s not like that. We’re friends.”

“So? We were friends and I was in love with you.”

It was like a punch in the stomach. It wasn’t a secret, but he said it aloud for the first time.
