“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” my thumb caressed his. “I’ll be right back.”

I didn’t want to tell him I was going to the bathroom. Why would I want to tell that to a boy I intended to kiss?

There was a bathroom on the ground floor with a line in front of it, so I decided to sneak upstairs. I wasn’t allowed to. Amy’s parents didn’t like it when we did that, but my need to pee was too overwhelming for me to stand in the line. And I wanted to get back to Lucas as fast as possible. I liked how he squeezed my hand when I tried to pull away.

Someone knocked on the door when I was in the bathroom. I wasn’t the only one not wanting to wait to pee.

A minute later I got out, and I saw Dylan. His back was plastered to the opposite wall.

“Hey, I thought you left,” I smiled at him.

Earlier he got inside the house and never came back.

He was taller than I remembered. He looked at me with a huge grin on his face.

“And I thought there was a rule that said we shouldn’t come up here,” he teased. “Do you like breaking the rules?”

“Do you?” I asked with a snort.

“Yes.”

I felt a knot forming in my stomach. There was something weird about him being here. Did he follow me here?

“I had to use the bathroom and the one downstairs was occupied. What are you doing here?” I asked again.

“Same. But now I’m eavesdropping. A couple is making out behind that door over there. But I don’t think they are a real couple.”

I looked down the hallway and tried to listen carefully. A few seconds later a loud moan and some male groaning filled the silence.

I was mortified. I was standing in a hallway alone with a boy listening to people moan.

It wasn’t like I never talked about sex. There were occasional jokes that boys shared with us. But it was different now. He wasn’t telling a joke, and we were alone. I heard the noises the couple was making, and I felt my skin reddening with shame. I was so shocked I didn’t know what to do.

“Do you want to see them?” Dylan asked. “You would be able to tell me if they are a couple or not.”

“No, thanks,” I tried to figure out a way to leave. “Does it matter anyway? If they are a couple?” He shrugged.

“Aren’t you interested just a little bit if they are having an affair? You probably know them.”

I thought about my father’s affair. I had enough of that for years to come, so I definitely wasn’t interested in who were the people making out behind that door.

Also the noises were becoming way too inappropriate for us to listen.

“I don’t really care about gossip, so I’m going back outside,” I murmured.

“To your boyfriend?” Dylan asked with a curious tone.

Before I had the chance to think of an answer to that, the woman behind the door spoke.

“And you’re going to kiss your wife with that mouth?”

My jaw slacked. My pulse quickened. I froze.

Sylvia Hartley, ladies and gentlemen!

A moment later, I began to tremble, and I clenched my fists preventing my hands from shaking.
