“I wouldn’t miss it. You?”

“Have to. I’m on the team.”

His eyebrows shot up. “What? Artistic Ella, playing a sport? I have been gone a long time.”

She giggled lightly. “You definitely have. But I think it would be a stretch to call it a sport. It’s just a ragtag community league. Much to your brother’s chagrin, by the way. I think it eats a little bit of his soul every time I step up to the plate.”

Donovan laughed. “Oh God, now I’m definitely going. To see the look on my professional ballplayer brother’s face when you take a swing and miss? Priceless.”

“Well, don’t worry. You’re going to get to see that plenty tonight.”

Giving her another quick hug, he turned to go. At the last minute before stepping through the door, though, he stopped and turned back to her, taking a few steps back into the shop. “Oh, and, Ell?”

“Yes?”

“Seriously. Don’t worry. I’m taking care of it.”

She sighed and let the warm sensation of safety and protection wash over her. She’d missed it so much. “I believe you.”
