Annmarie arched a brow. “I came to see my new friend, if you don’t mind,” she said, ignoring her cousin’s warning looks and taking a seat in the chair next to Harlee. “You look like you need to get out, get a little fresh air and party a bit.”

“No,” Adrian said curtly.

“I can speak for myself, thank you,” Harlee said, lifting her chin. “Sounds like fun.”

“Yes, it does,” Annmarie replied before staring at Adrian. “And why not? Are you intending to keep her prisoner here until she agrees to fuck your brains out?”

Duncan chuckled at how easily Annmarie pushed Adrian’s buttons. That kind of banter among kin made him miss his own family in Scotland, even though the work he did here was important. There was just something about the comfort of family, even if they did occasionally drive you crazy.

“What makes you think she’s capable of fucking my brains out?” Adrian challenged, his gaze directed at Harlee, not his cousin.

The vampire was either completely daft or teasing. Duncan could smell Harlee’s sexuality, banked like a smoldering fire and ready to ignite at the first touch of an accelerant. He was going to make damn sure he added fuel to her fire, though he wondered if she’d burn him alive.

“Keep it up, pal, and you may never find out,” Harlee replied with a smirk of her own.

There it was. That spunk that made her so attractive. It wasn’t hard to see the sparks flying between Adrian and Harlee. Some chemistry definitely at work there. He wondered if that had anything to do with her dominant side slowly coming to the surface. Was she inherently vampire instead of lycan? He supposed he’d have to wait patiently and see what developed, on both counts.

“So? Are we up for a little party? I was thinking Blood and Guts,” Annmarie said.

Adrian rolled his eyes. “Yeah, throw her right into the fire on her first night.”

“Not a bad idea, though,” Duncan said, sending a pointed look to Adrian. “Might be a learning experience for her and step up the process a bit.”

Raising both brows in thought, Adrian finally nodded. “You’re right. Blood and Guts it is.”

“Um, what’s Blood and Guts?” Harlee asked, eyes wide. “Or do I even want to know?”

“Oh you’ll love it,” Annmarie replied with a grin. “I think we should go tonight.”

“That sounds fun. I’d love to.”

“Annmarie,” Adrian warned.

“Oh quit being such a prude, Adrian,” she replied. “Let the girl have a little bit of fun. She has to learn about us, right?”

He sighed. “I guess.”

“Okay, then. Come on, honey. Let’s spend the afternoon going over clothes. We’ll have lunch, do our nails, hair and have a little girl fun before these men bore you to death with a history lesson. I know exactly what you should wear. Ta ta, gentlemen,” she said with a wave, dragging Harlee out the door by her arm.

“I had some paperwork to do anyway,” Duncan said, suppressing a chuckle at Adrian’s disgruntled look.

Adrian shook his head and muttered a curse as he stepped out of the library. Duncan followed, grinning at this turn of events. He had very few friends among the vampires and he counted Adrian as one of those few. But his friend had control issues. And Duncan had a feeling that between Annmarie and Harlee, he’d have very little.

It should prove to be an interesting night.

The driving beat of the bass could be heard from the parking lot of the two-story club, a converted warehouse painted all black, even the windows. Only a red neon sign pointed out its entrance. Annmarie sauntered past the long line and up to the front door, dragging one fingernail over the cheek of the huge bouncer outside, who waved them in.

“Know people in all the right places?” Harlee asked.

Annmarie grinned. “Or all the wrong places.”

Harlee felt underdressed, the cool night air blowing underneath the tiny black stretchy miniskirt Annmarie had insisted she wear. And the little scrap of material covering only her pussy lips could in no way constitute underwear. She’d been scandalized when Annmarie took her shopping in the Dark Moon shopping complex that afternoon and picked out clothing and underthings that Harlee wouldn’t have purchased in a million years. But then again, Harlee hadn’t been the one doing the buying since she had no money, so she couldn’t be choosy. The belly-skimming silk halter top in blood red admittedly felt sexy and sensuous against her nipples, the breeze ruffling the material against the puckered buds, making them stand up noticeably.

Or at least Adrian and Duncan noticed. Flanked on either side of her as they escorted her through the throng of people waiting in line at the Blood and Guts, casting their gazes throughout the crowd as if an assassin lurked within the group.

Honestly, it wasn’t as if anyone knew who the hell she was. Even they didn’t know, so she had no idea what they were worried about. Though there was the matter of Stefan’s murder and the fact she was his daughter did put her in jeopardy.

Correction. They thought she was his daughter. But if they thought so, other vampires and lycans thought so too. In fact, Adrian had grumbled about it the entire way to the club, complaining they couldn’t protect her in a crowd like this. Annmarie brushed him off and told him Harlee had to learn about their ways and what better way to do that than to see them in action.
