“It’s all right, lass. It’ll heal soon enough. Just weakened me for a minute.”

Weakened her ass. Duncan had been bleeding so hard he could have died within minutes. “We almost lost you.”

“If the bullet hadn’t been coated in silver, I wouldn’t even have flinched. I was lucky it passed through me. I’ll be fine.”

Fine. If she heard that word again she’d scream. She felt impotent, unable to do anything but sit there and watch him rest in bed. Something Duncan apparently didn’t do very well. He fidgeted every few seconds and scowled incessantly. She tried to keep him in place by talking to him.

“How do you think the government found us?”

He shrugged. “Don’t know. But I’ll be looking into it.”

She refused to admit how frightened she’d been. Her fear hadn’t been for her own life, though, which surprised her. She feared what they’d do to Duncan and Adrian when they caught them. Harlee surmised whoever had been chasing them wasn’t the least bit interested in capturing them. And that scared her more than anything. Scared her, and made her angry. After all, the government’s goal was to eliminate the lycan and vampires completely. Elimination meant killing.

And they’d almost killed Duncan. Between the ultraviolet laser fire and the silver-coated bullets, it was obviously their intent to kill both the vampire and the lycan.

“I’ll be all right, lass. Just give me a few minutes to recover.”

“Few minutes my ass, Duncan. You almost bled to death.”

“Trust me. I’ll be fine.”

There was that word again. Even though the lycan physician had insisted Duncan would heal, she couldn’t imagine a gaping hole like that just closing up.

“You’re very pretty when you worry,” Duncan said.

Harlee looked up and met his gaze. There was at least some color in his face now. And he was smiling. Grinning, actually. “I’m not worried.”

“Yes you are. You’re worried about me. I take that as a compliment, lass.”

“Just don’t want you dying,” she muttered, feeling embarrassed about worrying so much about him. He wasn’t even pale any longer.

“Harlee, look at the wound.”

She approached the bed and sat next to him. When he lifted the sheet away from his chest, she was surprised to see the wound had already closed and was healing, only a light pink scar left.

“Lycans heal quickly.”

“But those bullets had been laced with silver.” And she knew that silver was lethal to lycans, just as ultraviolet light was to vampires.

“Aye. That’s why the healing didn’t take place right away. But the bullet passed through me so quickly it didn’t have time to deposit much, if any, of the silver.”

“Won’t silver kill you instantly?”

“Not necessarily. Depends on how long the silver’s within us. If it’s embedded, then within minutes. If the bullet had stayed, the silver would have dissolved and entered my bloodstream. I’d be dead already.”

“That’s what happened to Stefan?” she asked, certain her eyes were playing tricks on her as she glanced at his wound. It was almost completely healed. She sighed in relief even as she stared at it, wide-eyed with disbelief.

“Stefan was stabbed with a knife dipped in liquid silver. As soon as it went in the silver entered his bloodstream in its liquid form and killed him within minutes.”

She had so much to learn about lycans, and an equal amount about vampires. But for the moment, she was grateful Duncan had escaped death. “I’m glad you’re going to be okay.”

“Why, thank you, lass,” he said, cupping the back of her neck and shocking the hell out of her by pulling her toward him.

Too curious to resist, she allowed him to bring her closer. His tongue snaked out and traced her mouth, then slid past the seam of her lips and touched hers. Energy surged at the first stroke of his tongue to hers, a lightning strike centered low in her belly. Heat pooled between her legs and her libido came to raging life. She whimpered against his mouth and threaded her fingers through his thick, silky hair.

In a swift move, he grabbed her waist and dragged her on top of him. She pulled back, shocked and worried about hurting him. “Duncan!”
