But just before Evie grabbed the last piece, he reached out and traced his thumb over her bottom lip. Her eyes met his for one second before she jumped, her head thumping the table and a cry erupted from her lips.

With a muttered oath, he reached for her, but she jumped again, her head hitting the table a second time.

Quickly, he grabbed her head, his fingers sliding into the silky mass of tresses as he guided her to come up from under the table without hitting her head a third time.

As they came up, Evan became aware that every person in the game room was staring at their table.

Evie’s face went scarlet as she quickly pushed back from her chair, his pieces from her lap scattering to the floor once again. “I’m so sorry,” she muttered and then made a dash for the door.

He stood too.
