“From a furniture maker who normally specializes in jewelry cases. My mother…” Tillie swallowed. “My mother had them commissioned for me.”

That made his brows rise as his lips parted in surprise. The marchioness had done that? How interesting. He could have asked her a thousand more questions but from somewhere deep in the house a clock chimed five times.

Tillie heard it too. “Five already?”

He sighed. “I’m sorry to do this, but I think I should go. I’ll have to leave dinner early so I can’t be late. I’ve got to get myself ready.”

Tillie nodded, disappointment evident on her delicate features. But then she reached for his hand, her fingers sliding into his in a way that made his entire body come alive with awareness. “Thank you for this afternoon. It’s been one of the most wonderful of my life.”

He squeezed her fingers. “You’ve a gift Tillie,” he answered. “You should honor it no matter what you choose for a future.”

And he meant those words. Even if it meant that Tillie would never be his.
