“That is fortunate.” Her fingers played along his sleeve. “I love that you have a scientific hobby. It speaks of passion and purpose.”

“I think the same of you.”

She gave him a soft smile. “I must confess, I didn’t think that we’d ever get along like this. I’m glad we’ve become friends.”

“Friends,” he repeated, though a bit of his joy was deflated. Still, he took a deep breath of evening air, the heat of her pressed to his side warming him as he tightened his arm. Their embrace spoke of something more than friendship. Tillie was in the process of transforming. Becoming the woman she was meant to be. She needed time and space to see change completed and he’d not push her for more. But he did drop his cheek to the top of her head. “I am too.”

They stood there for some time until the music inside began to subside. Then he lifted his cheek again. “I do believe our waltz is next.”

Tillie turned to look inside. “Is it really?”

“Shall we?” he asked, his hand sliding up her back.

“If you insist,” she answered. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

That made him smile. Apparently, even a waltz was an adventure with Tillie. In every way, she was such a welcome change. “I’ve been warned.”
