“Not so fast,” he whispered. She looked at him, genuinely perplexed. “That wasn’t a proper kiss. I can’t take that kiss to seal the bargain.”

Lady Julie placed her hands on his chest as if to push him away, but her hands froze against him. She brought her eyes back to his.

“What do you want from me?” she breathed, looking at him, pleading.

“I’ve already told you, a proper kiss.”

She let out another tiny sigh before again getting up on tiptoes and placing her mouth over his. This time, she kissed him with her mouth slightly open, her warmth enveloping his lips.

Before she could pull away again, Robert took control of the kiss, slanting his mouth over hers, and kissed her with a greedy passion. Taking advantage of her parted lips, he pushed his tongue inside and licked urgently at the silky corners of her mouth. God, she felt so warm, so sweet, so—stiff. He felt her freeze in his arms, not responding to his ministrations. Robert felt his skin heat. Despite her lack of enthusiasm, Robert felt his muscles tightening and his cock responding happily to the nearness of a warm, soft woman. He needed to coax a reaction out of her. He couldn’t—no, hewouldn’t—marry a woman who was so obviously repulsed by him when his response to her was anything but.

He placed a hand at her nape and tilted her head for a better angle before deepening the kiss even more. She tasted sweet and lovely. Entranced and lost in the feel of her, his hands roamed her body, his tongue exploring her mouth. He thought he actually felt her shy response as her body pressed against his and heard her slight moan until she pushed at him with a muffled protest.

Robert reluctantly let her go, panting. No, that was not a response. She didn’t want his kisses. He looked up at her. Her lush breasts were moving in frantic rhythm with her breaths, drawing his gaze. His hands clenched at his sides as he tried to subdue his arousal. He forced himself to raise his eyes, and what he saw was enough to cool his ardor. She was looking at him with a terrified expression on her face, as if he’d just killed someone in front of her. Her color heightened past the crimson red into the realms of vermilion. She was breathing heavily, too, as if from exertion or anger. Then she did something that lowered his temperature to that of arctic ice. She wiped her swollen, wet lips with the back of her hand in a gesture of disgust.

Robert hardened his eyes and tried to pull his usual inscrutable mask back into place. “I was right,” he said, settling back in his chair, although it was ungentlemanly for him to sit while she was still standing. “Bitter.”

Her eyes lit up in outrage for a moment before the anger died out inside her.

“Do we have a deal?” she asked in a low, slightly hoarse voice.

“We do,” he said shortly.
