Chapter 19

Julie lay in the bath, enjoying the feel of the steamy hot water on her skin. She was pleasantly numb after vigorous lovemaking in Robert’s study. She had no idea that the marriage act could be so delicious. She had no words to describe the feeling. The way he stimulated her with his mouth—The thought made her feel a tingle low in her abdomen. God, she wanted him again. She moaned and moved in the water, trying to shift her thoughts from Robert and his skillful hands, tongue, and other parts of him. She opened her eyes and shook her head. It didn’t help. She giggled like a little girl, splashing the water in the bath.

What he did to her was beyond shameful and in broad daylight to boot! Somehow, she couldn’t scrounge up an ounce of shame or embarrassment. She took a sponge, doused it with soap, and scrubbed her skin as painfully as she could to keep her mind from wandering back to Robert and all his delightful parts.

The dinner was tortuous to Julie. If she felt self-conscious after the first time they made love, this time she was completely mortified. She acted like a helpless wanton, screaming and moaning in delight while clutching his buttock. What did he think of her now? Julie was sure she spent the entire dinner covered with every shade of red visible by the human eye.

She had paid little attention to the conversation as it flowed around her, being able to only notice Robert’s glances her way. Wave after wave of heat covering her body every time he did so.

Since Mary got tired early these days, they’ve spent a short time in a parlor room playing cards after supper and retired early. Julie was worried for Mary and didn’t want to tire her out. At the same time, she had another, more selfish reason to retire early. She wanted to spend some more time alone with her husband. She wanted to know if he was pleased with her after what happened in his study. Would he be disgusted by her wantonness?

She sat at the vanity table, brushing her hair when Robert came into her room. He walked behind her and placed his hands on her shoulders.

“You are beautiful,” he breathed, and Julie colored again.

She downcast her eyes. “I have something for you.”

“I am sure you do,” Robert said, his gaze oddly intent.

Julie stood and walked to her bedside table. She opened one of the drawers and pulled out a tiny gift she got him a few days earlier and was waiting for a perfect time to give him. She turned toward him, feeling shy. How did one make a gift to one’s husband? Was it always this awkward?

She took a step in his direction and extended her hand. Robert looked at her hand as if it were something alien. His brows were furrowed, his mouth pressed into a thin line.

“A gift?” he asked as if he did not know what the name implied. “What for?”

Julie smiled at his odd reaction. “Do I need a reason to give my husband a gift?”

Robert scratched his chin. “I don’t know. I’ve never had a husband.”

Julie let out a nervous chuckle. “Take it.”

Robert complied and opened a small leather box, and stared at the gift for a few seconds. Inside lay a battered and bruised piece of the silver watch, with beautiful patterns. Julie bit her lip nervously.

“It’s a watch,” she said finally.

Robert slowly took it out of the box and looked at it carefully.

“The shopkeeper said that this watch has one of the finest craftsmanship,” she explained, “but the problem is, they seem to lag several minutes, no matter how many times you wind it. I immediately thought it would be perfect for you. So you don’t wait for Mary and me too long.”

Robert’s lips twitched for a moment before he let go a bark of laughter. He enfolded her in a swift hug and kissed her on her forehead.

“It’s never a labor to wait for you, darling,” he breathed.

Julie gazed into his eyes, the rest of the world melting away, leaving just the unfathomable depths of his silver eyes. He lowered his head slowly, deliberately until he was a hairbreadth away from her. Julie couldn’t wait anymore, so she took the last step and put her lips on his. Robert instantly took over the kiss, licking at her, grazing her lips with his teeth, and Julie couldn’t help but imitate him. She shaped her body to his and clung to him tightly, taking more of his taste, his scent into her senses.

Next moment the world whirled around her as Robert took her in his arms and laid her on her bed. Julie instantly covered her body with a coverlet, and Robert smirked at the action.

He ripped his shirt off his shoulders and took off his breaches and smalls, and walked toward her with dark purpose in his eyes.

“I hope you don’t mind doing it with the candlelight burning?” he asked as he climbed onto the bed. He lowered the coverlet from her body, slowly at first, before yanking it off the bed entirely.

Julie gasped a little, watching the intense fire burning in her husband’s eyes. He raked her with his gaze, devouring her with his eyes.

“Take off your chemise,” he said in a hoarse voice.

Julie’s hands trembled when she obeyed to do as he asked. She drew her chemise over her head and laid it on the floor beside the bed.

She was completely naked to his gaze. He was looking at her as if she were a banquet in front of a starved animal. She shivered a little, and at the same time, her body was covered with heat. He crawled on top of her and caged her with his arms and legs. Then lowered his mouth to hers and took her in a slow and sensual kiss. Julie couldn’t help but moan and arch into him, her breasts chafing against his hard chest. She heard him make an approving sound in the back of his throat, but she couldn’t help but feel self-conscious. It was different somehow, in his study. When they both seemed crazed with passion. Now, lying in her bed, under his soft ministrations, she couldn’t help but feel uncertain.
