“Let me do this, Sam. It’s the least I can do.”
Sam leaned forward and hugged her knees with her arms as John started gently, tenderly washing her back. He moved her hair aside and goosebumps covered her flesh from the contact. He proceeded washing her neck, shoulders, and hands. Then he gently lay her down and continued to her feet and the rest of her body. His movements weren’t seductive; he just carefully washed her as the maid would, slowly rubbing at her skin.
Sam was languid and relaxed, reveling in the tender ministrations of her husband.
“Sit up and throw your head back. I’ll wash your hair.”
“John, you don’t have to—” Sam started to protest, but John looked at her pleadingly.
“Please.”
Sam nodded and did as he asked. John took a pitcher of water and poured it on her hair. Then he lathered soap onto his hands and proceeded carefully massaging her scalp. The sensation was so pleasant Sam was tempted to moan.
John rinsed her hair and when he was finished, he took a towel and came to stand by the bath.
He extended his hand toward her. “Come, let me dry you now.”
“All right.” Sam didn’t argue anymore.
She got up with the help of her husband, then he wrapped her in a towel and swept her into his arms. He settled her on the blanket by the hearth and proceeded to dry her softly with towels. When the chore was done, he gently hugged her from behind and placed a tender kiss on her cheek.
“Good night.” With that, John stood and walked toward the door.
“You’re leaving?” Sam’s eyes widened in astonishment.
“Don’t worry, Angel, I will be right outside.”
“What do you mean?”
“I am not leaving you. I promise.” He winked with the last word and left the room.
Sam blinked at the closed door. What had just happened?
A few seconds later, she heard an audible thump.
“I’ll be here,” John called out. “I sleep on the floor anyway. What does it matter where?”
Sam couldn’t shake the bewilderment out of her face. He was planning to sleep there. Outside of her door. The entire night.
