Epilogue

One year later.

Sam woke up in the middle of the night at the sound of the door closing. She opened her eyes and looked around. The place by the balcony where John usually slept was empty. So he was out again.

She stood, put on her slippers and dressing gown, and ventured out of the room. The stairs creaked under her footsteps as she made her way upstairs. She turned left when she reached the corridor and heard a low humming sound. Sam smiled to herself.

She walked to the door of the nursery and beheld her husband softly rocking the babe in his arms.

“Don’t we have a nursemaid for that?” she whispered and ventured into the room.

John looked at her without stopping the rocking motions and smiled. “I didn’t want to wake her.”

Sam glanced at the peacefully slumbering maid and shook her head. She came closer and stopped to stare at the infant in John’s arms. Their little angel. The babe wasn’t sleeping. She was making soft cooing sounds and waving her arms in the air.

“Unlike her nursemaid, our little one doesn’t seem to want to sleep,” John whispered.

Sam stretched out her arms toward John. “She must be hungry. Do you mind if I take her?”

John looked at the babe in his arms for a moment before nodding and handing her over. Sam slipped her breast out of her chemise and started nursing her daughter.

John raised a brow. “You know the nurse would be scandalized if she saw you feeding her. She’d start insisting again that we need a wet nurse.”

Sam laughed. “It’s good that she’s sleeping then.”

In a few moments, the child was contentedly sleeping in Sam’s arms. Sam slowly walked to the crib and deposited the babe inside. John came up behind her and put his arms around her waist, gently stroking her abdomen.

“When do you think our angel will get a brother or a sister?”

“I can’t predict those things,” she said with a chuckle. “But as soon as we go back to our bedroom, we can definitely start working on it again.”

John kissed her on the temple, then turned and looked at their daughter. “Good night, Angela, darling,” he said.

Sam reached for the pendant hanging around her neck and stroked it gently. “Angels are watching over you.”
