“And what if I don’t please? I have as much right to be here as you. So how aboutyougo, and I stay?” Sam knew she was courting trouble being in a room alone with a gentleman. But his highhandedness mixed with her embarrassment made her stubborn.

“I was here first so…” He trailed off.

“Oh, what are you five years old?” she asked indignantly.

“Listen, Miss, I am having a bad day, a blasted headache, and haven’t had a minute of peace,” he said angrily. “I really wish you would leave me alone.”

“If you were a gentleman, not only would you not be hiding out in a dark room all by yourself during a crush of a ball, but you’d concede a room to a lady,” she said pointedly, although she’d already picked up her skirts and turned, ready to leave.

“If you were a lady,” he said in a dark tone behind her, “you wouldn’t be hiking your skirts up to your waist in front of a gentleman.”

Sam gasped in outrage, while her cheeks burned in mortification. The cad had seen her with her raised skirts, and she wished she could fall through the floor at that moment. “Y-you, i-it is very dark in here, so you couldn’t have seen anything,” she managed with as much dignity as she could muster.

“Oh, believe me,” he said slowly, “I saw plenty. Beautiful calves, by the way. You must be a graceful rider.”

Samantha drew in an outraged breath, but for the life of her could not say anything in response. That’s when she heard a weird choking sound and realized that the insufferable man was chuckling. He was laughing at her.

“You are the most impossible man I have ever met!” She whirled on her heels and stalked out of the room.
