Maybe if Gage wed, then Isabel wouldn’t feel so responsible for this family and would be more open to finding her own happiness in life. Samantha scoffed. Gage, married? She didn’t think those two words were ever uttered in the same sentence. At least not since Richard had inherited the title.

As a matter of fact, none of her brothers was in a hurry to shackle themselves to a wife. All except for Benedict. Ben had wanted to marry and have children of his own. He had written to Sam about all this in his letters.

A peaceful life.

Sam had to shake her head from the maudlin thoughts.

Realizing that the restless thoughts were not going away, she sat up and squinted at the clock on her fireplace mantel. It was close to dawn.

Well, if I am not getting any sleep, I might as well get some exercise out of the way. With that thought, she climbed out of bed and resolutely walked into her dressing room.

Putting on her pale green riding habit by herself was no simple task, but she didn’t want to wake her young maid. Gina was not an early riser, and it would take Sam longer to rouse her than to dress by herself. After donning her riding attire, she went down to the servants’ hall and knocked on the farthest door.

“I’m up, Miss,” came a sharp voice from behind it. Then the door unlocked and a tall young footman appeared in the doorway. “Are we riding today, Miss?”

Sam nodded and smiled.
