“God, Evie,” Gabriel groaned.

She raised her eyes to his face. His eyes were closed, his head thrown back, and he was writhing beneath her as if in agony. She smiled inwardly, her physical ability to smile hindered by the fact that her mouth was full of him. The thought oddly sent waves of shivers along her body and a tingle between her legs. She felt empty there; she needed him filling her. Instead, Evie dragged her mouth lower down his shaft, taking as much of him in as possible. Her mouth watered, and she sucked hard to collect the excess liquid, at the same time collecting more of his taste.

“Evie,” Gabriel croaked. “I am going to come. You need to— You—” With a groan, he dragged her away from his shaft and turned into the mattress. His hands were fisted in the sheets, his body shaking as he screamed into the pillow.

Missing the heat of his body, Evie slowly lowered herself onto his back and snuggled close to him.

Gabriel gazed at his wife as she ate her breakfast. She was quiet this morning, not subdued like she was a few days ago, but content. After this morning’s lovemaking, they shared a bath and then indulged in each other twice more. He was certain she would be sore after last night, but she didn’t seem to have any soreness at all. Well, she was athletic, so perhaps their vigorous lovemaking hadn’t taken a toll on her body as much as he expected.

She looked at him and raised a brow. “Is breakfast not to your liking, husband?”

“Oh, no, it is brilliant, I am sure. Except that my wife tastes better.”

Evie darted her eyes to the footmen who stood by the wall and then threw a chastising gaze toward Gabriel.

He laughed. “You didn’t expect me to behave, did you?”

Evie picked up her fork with a haughty look, took a piece of fruit, and popped it in her mouth. Gabriel followed the motion with avid interest.

“I do,” she said after swallowing the piece of food. “At least, in front of my servants.”

“Pardon, Your Grace. I shall correct my behavior accordingly.” He grinned. “So, what are your plans for the day?”

“Actually.” Evie cleared her throat and placed a fork on the side of her plate. “Your father is coming here in about an hour. We were going to go over some numbers from my ledgers….”

Gabriel groaned. “You’ll excuse me if I’ll skip the family meeting.”

“I would rather you stayed.”

“And I would rather he didn’t come.”

“Gabriel, he is your father.”

“My dear wife, you came from a very affectionate and close-knit family. So naturally, you feel the inclination to flock to other family members, but I am not like that. I grew up in a cold and lonely household, and I do not wish to revisit these memories. He might be exceedingly generous with you, but he has never been so with me. Pardon me if I don’t share in your enthusiasm.”

“I was going to say that perhaps you give him another chance. He was wrong; I grant it—”

“Thank you.”

“But…”

Gabriel heaved a long sigh and looked at her with a bored expression on his face.

“I just wish you two spent more time together. You are more alike than you might realize,” she said.

Gabriel stood. “I shall do anything for you, my dear wife, you know it. I shall kill for you, and I shall die for you, but please, do not ask that of me.” He placed a chaste kiss on her forehead and stalked toward the door.

“Where are you going?” Evie’s worried voice followed him to the door.

“Just out for air. I shall be back for supper. Hopefully, your guest will be gone by then.”
